Sharon and I came to Missouri with a deep sense of call. In our journeys across the state to visit our churches, we sensed the Lord was at work in Missouri Baptists. Part of my role is to promote, celebrate, and persuade people to capture in their minds the power of the Cooperative Program. God wants to do something special with people who trust Him with their earthly possessions. He wants to do the powerful, not necessarily the ostentatious, through local churches. He wants to do … [Read more...]
‘Sound of Freedom’ exposes sin of trafficking
KANSAS CITY – “Sound of Freedom” is a deeply unsettling and unpleasant viewing experience. It’s also a well-done, well-acted, riveting movie which – with a few caveats – demands to be seen. You may have heard of the film in recent days, perhaps due to its surprise success at the box office, its dark subject matter, its circuitous path to your local theater, or maybe all three. “Sound of Freedom” is based on the true story of Tim Ballard, federal agent on a crusade to rescue children … [Read more...]
Despite hectic headlines, the gospel gives us peace
A glance at global headlines from the past several weeks makes one thing clear: The world is starving for peace. Apparently, this is true even on the baseball field, where Guardians third baseman José Ramírez and White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson threw off their gloves, Aug. 5, for a game-stopping, bare-fisted fight at second base. But global turbulence and brokenness has spread far beyond the ballfield, as made evident by a few recent reports from WORLD News Group: • In a South Korean … [Read more...]
‘We need prayer’: Ukrainian seminary president speaks at Fellowship of Wildwood about ongoing war, gospel opportunities
WILDWOOD – Slavik Pyzh, Ukrainian Baptist Theological Seminary (UBTS) president, reported to the Fellowship of Wildwood congregation that leadership was still a focus despite the ongoing war. “I would like to report that the war is over,” Pyzh said, “but it is not. The city of Lviv where our seminary is located was hit with missiles. About forty apartment buildings were destroyed. The home of one of our partners who works with the Young Leaders Program was hit. He has a pregnant wife and a … [Read more...]
Springhill Baptist Church, Springfield, partners with Noel churches to reach 8 language groups
NOEL – Relationships are important in evangelism and Joshua Manning, pastor of Community Baptist Church in Noel, believes relationships are important for churches. “Our church has seen lots of mission groups,” Manning said, “But it is the relationships with the area churches that are important. Springhill in Springfield, Fellowship and FBC in Neosho, and FBC Anderson among others have all been great partners.” “Our church was established in 1880,” Manning added. “Since then, the … [Read more...]
HLGU student earns associate’s degree 50 years in the making
HANNIBAL – Wes Segawa completed one class this past semester at Hannibal-LaGrange University (HLG) and graduated with an associate degree in May. That’s the short of a 50-year-long story. The one class was what he lacked for the degree he started in the early 1970s. Segawa, of Hilo, Hawaii, graduated from Hilo in 1970. Like many Asian immigrants in the Hawaiian islands, he grew up a fourth-generation Buddhist. Rev. Richard Uejo, a Hawaiian pastor and 1940 graduate with his wife Masue, led … [Read more...]
Oral Bible stories reach ‘everyday’ people
NORTH AFRICA (IMB) – Riding home on the subway, Patrick Stein casually looked around at fellow passengers. Two things stood out: 1) As a 50-something, he was probably one of the oldest commuters. The median age in this North African city was 26. 2) Everyone had earbuds and stared at their phones, each person in their own private world. The International Mission Board missionary silently wondered what it would take to get people as interested and engaged in Bible stories. As the train … [Read more...]
What do you know about MBCH?
When you hear the name “Missouri Baptist Children’s Home,” what images come to your mind? Do you see campuses full of young children waiting for a forever home? Do you see an orphanage? Forty-one people find faith in Christ during Lifepointe, Sedalia, tent revival
SEDALIA – A four-day tent revival north of Sedalia brought people to Christ and some were baptized at the event. Lifepointe Church pastor Rusty Thomas reported 41 salvations, 31 baptisms, and three child dedications. From July 12-15, there were a total of 253 people in the children’s tent, 3,199 people in the main tent, and 10,639 people who followed the tent revival on Facebook. This made the total attendance of 14,091 people. “To God be the Glory,” Thomas said after the event. But the … [Read more...]
New Hope, Sedalia, ministers to homeless
SEDALIA – Preparing for a mission trip to New Orleans isn’t always what God wants. New Hope Baptist Church, Sedalia, found God was pointing them in a different way. “I’ve been to the New Orleans French Quarter to minister to the homeless at least five times,” Marc Knapp, pastor, said. “We were preparing to take a group there. I was explaining to them what we would encounter on the trip, but we began to pray, and we discovered that God wanted us to do it here.” “We realized that we were to … [Read more...]
Caddy’s ministry integrates faith, art
WALNUT GROVE – For 25 years, Kurt Caddy served as the Director of University Ministries at Southwest Baptist University. After retiring in 2022, Caddy formally launched Fourwinds Faith and Art, a ministry designed to inspire the church to use art for discipleship, worship, and evangelism. The ministry derives its name from Ezekiel 37:9 where God tells Ezekiel to call upon the four winds to bring life to the valley of dry bones. Caddy described the fourfold purpose of Fourwinds: educate … [Read more...]
Gospel arrived right on time for believer in Himalayas
SOUTH ASIA (IMB) – International Mission Board missionaries are grateful that the gospel got to Shanti, a new believer from a formerly unengaged, unreached people group, right on time. Last year, the IMB shared about national believers Lalita and Sandeep. In partnership with IMB missionaries Mike and Beth McKenzie, Sandeep located an unreached people group on a trip that Mike commissioned among his national partners. The national partners were tasked to go into hard-to-reach areas and … [Read more...]
