JEFFERSON CITY—In his 17-minute keynote address to those gathered for the 8th annual Prayer Service for State Government Leaders, John Yeats, the new executive director of the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC), urged citizens to pray for those who are in authority. Yeats said obeying I Timothy 2:1-4 can lead people into a lifestyle of prayer that would help produce quiet and peaceable lives in communities that are under the jurisdictional authority of elected officials. His Jan. 4 message … [Read more...]
Government leaders thankful for prayers in their behalf
JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri’s government leaders have expressed their appreciation for specific prayers offered on their behalf on Jan.4, the opening day of the 2012 General Assembly. “It’s very easy to get our focus on the problems,” said Sen. Bob Dixon of Springfield adding, “It’s a lot easier to solve problems if we get our focus on the Solver.” The event was held at Concord Baptist Church and sponsored by Missouri Baptist Convention’s (MBC) Christian Life Commission, The Pathway, and … [Read more...]
MBC pushes evangelism at speedway
WHEATLAND – The thousands of people in the grandstands at the Lucas Oil Speedway will hear more than the National Anthem and the roar of stock cars rounding the dirt track; they’ll hear the gospel. The Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC), through a grant provided by the North American Mission Board (NAMB), is sponsoring an evening of races April 21 at the dirt race track in Wheatland. The name “Missouri Baptist Convention” won’t be seen anywhere, however. Instead, the night’s four races will … [Read more...]
‘We Care’ plan launched in Chicago
SHOREWOOD, IL – A staggering 2 million lost people live in the Three Rivers Baptist Association (TRBA) area of the Chicago suburbs. And Dan Eddington, director of missions for TRBA, cares deeply for all 2 million of them. He cares about their lives, their families, their spiritual and physical needs and especially their eternal destinations. His concerns led Eddington to develop the “We Care Campaign,” a ministry effort he hopes will demonstrate to nearby communities how much he, the … [Read more...]
New Year’s goals: Christ like, holy living
I start a new fitness routine around the first of every year—with several thousand of my like-minded and like-squishy American friends. The new routine usually begins with the ceremonial setting of the 1200-calories-per-day goal. It’s a moving ceremony with no small amount of tears, but at least there’s a goal. Of course, being the goal-oriented kind of person I am, by the second week I’m meeting my 1200-calorie goal without fail. I’m meeting it before lunch. But still, I like to think that … [Read more...]
Start right here, let us prepare our hearts for God
The English revivalist Gypsy Smith challenged his listeners to take a piece of chalk and draw a circle on the ground. Once the circle was complete, get inside the circle and pray, “Lord God, send revival and begin it right here in this circle!” We desperately need a movement of God’s Spirit in our day. As individuals, churches and a culture, we have insurmountable problems that our best human ingenuity cannot fix. We need the Lord to sweep into our churches in a fresh way. We need a great … [Read more...]
Pastor’s wife develops hidden gift of writing
BUFFALO – God has given many gifts to Ashley Haupt, wife of First Baptist Church Pastor Tim Haupt, but one gift, her gift of writing, laid dormant for several years until it was confirmed recently by being published in the November 2011 issue of Lifeway’s Homelife Magazine. “I have always loved writing,” Haupt said, but she did not feel her writing was a gift God could use to impact the lives of others with the love of Christ. “Looking back, I see some signs that God had given a gift, but … [Read more...]
Do not give ‘to’ the Cooperative Program
Do not, under any circumstances, give your money to the Cooperative Program (CP). Seriously. I mean it. To many, I guess, this might seem odd since Frederick Boulevard, the church I pastor, gives 8 percent of our undesignated receipts through the Cooperative Program. Ahh, but there is the difference. Giving TO the CP, I think, is something entirely different than giving THROUGH the CP. The CP is undeniably an impressive vehicle to take our church’s money and help disperse it to missions … [Read more...]
First Arnold rejoices over K people fruit
WEST AFRICA—When taking the gospel to the ends of the earth, there is no “end of the road.” That is what one Missouri Baptist team member said while driving cross country for more than 90 minutes from any improved road to a new village. First Baptist Church, Arnold, is the missionary to the K people of West Africa. The K people are oral learners who are Muslim synchronistic with traditional African religions (witchcraft). They have no written language, and consequently there is no Bible in … [Read more...]
Saunders prepares to help build brand of faith event
ST. LOUIS—Shane Saunders believes in the mission of Faith and Family Day with the St. Louis Rams to the point where he plans on helping it grow with a year-long effort leading up to the event in the fall of 2012. Judy Boen believes in him, too. Boen is the driving force behind the Christian Family Day organization, which for years was anchored at Busch Stadium with the St. Louis Cardinals and which now is making inroads at the Edward Jones Dome with the Rams. She likes what Saunders brings … [Read more...]
Missions: Hillcrest eyes African opportunity
LEBANON—David Brown admits that when it comes to international mission work, he is far from seasoned. “I’ve been a pastor for about nine years and I’ve only been on one mission trip,” said Brown, pastor at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Lebanon. “But you know, God calls us for different times and for different reasons and it’s exciting to see Him at work.” Brown, along with two other leaders from his church, is leaving Nov. 28 for a week-long vision trip to Senegal. “We will be working with … [Read more...]
Donut shop touches Charleston by faith
CHARLESTON—Starting a business in a poor economy may seem daunting, but Main Street Sweets did just fine in October. “We sold out the first three days,” said Bobby Morgan, baker and visionary behind the Oct. 13 launching of the downtown donut and breakfast shop. Both Morgan and his mother, Melony Fox, are members of First Baptist Church here and believers in a faith-based enterprise. The journey so far has been uplifting. “I just saw a movie here recently, and the main character opened … [Read more...]
