CAPE GIRARDEAU—The carpet of casino gambling, which is starting to loom large enough to be rolled out over virtually every square foot of Missouri territory, is about to be laid down in another room—the city of Cape Girardeau. The gambling industry coveted another market, and it got what it wanted Dec. 1 when the Missouri Gaming Commission voted to choose Cape Girardeau as the location for their next project. A November vote of the people in that city indicated that 61 percent were in … [Read more...]
Your church, a troop carrier or luxury liner?
In the late 1940s, the United States government commissioned William Francis Gibbs to work with the United States Lines to construct an $80 million troop carrier for the Navy. The purpose was to design a ship that could speedily carry 15,000 troops during times of war. By 1952, construction on the SS UnitedStates was complete. The ship could travel at 44 knots (about 51 miles per hour), and she could steam ten thousand miles without stopping for fuel or supplies. She could outrun any other … [Read more...]

Merry Christmas from The Pathway
The Birth of Jesus 1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register. 4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him … [Read more...]
Dad’s greatest gift: The truth behind Christmas
God has blessed me in so many ways throughout my life. One of the greatest blessings is that I was born into a strong Christian home, led by two life-long committed parents who loved and nurtured me and my younger brother and sister. For 38 years mom and dad demonstrated to us what it meant to be a committed, loving married couple for life and always pointed us to Jesus. Dad has gone on to Glory (in 1989) and we look forward to being reunited with him some day. Christmas for the Hinkle … [Read more...]
Jesus is the only genuine celebration of Christmas
Thankfully, it’s Christmas time again. It seems to me that Christmas has changed over the years. It used to be bigger than it is now. The disparity may be no more than the difference between the bright eyes of a boy a few years ago, and the shadowy eyes of an older man now. But the glitter of Christmas seems to have changed. When I was young, our family would go to downtown St. Louis just to walk the streets and look at the Christmas windows. We would walk the entire city block around … [Read more...]
Covenant aids homeless for Christmas
MOUNT VERNON – Huddled near trash can fires in an effort to stay warm on a cold December night, the youth at Covenant Baptist Church here demonstrated their love and God’s love for people in a most unusual way. This was the second year the youth group displayed what they call “Compassion City” in a grassy lot located in front of Summer Fresh Supermarket in Mount Vernon. “The idea is to simulate a homeless community with the intent of drawing awareness for the needy,” said Derick Barnes, … [Read more...]
Let us prepare Him room in our lives
Have you ever wondered what excuse the innkeepers could possibly have come up with that first Christmas that would’ve been enough to justify allowing the Son of God to be born in a barn? Okay, they had that census crowd excuse going for them. But lighting up their “no vacancy” sign as a hugely pregnant woman rides up on a donkey? You’d think someone would’ve made some room. I had a sort of “no vacancy” encounter on a much smaller scale. I was getting ready for a Christmas party, but there … [Read more...]
’Tis the season for Handel’s Hallelujah
Lately I’ve been getting these videos to look at on YouTube, GodTube and others about the Hallelujah Chorus being sung in surprise fashion in malls and train stations. It is very moving. To see the faces of unsuspecting people as they are presented with the very simple but elegant singing of the Second Coming of Christ is precious. Not only standard performances, but the version from “Young Messiah” is regenerative, hip, cool and exciting. It loses none of its power, and yet is totally … [Read more...]
Convention prayer service for Missouri government leaders moved to Jan. 6
JEFFERSON CITY—The 7th annual Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) Prayer Service for State Government Leaders has been moved from Jan. 5 to Jan. 6 by MBC leaders due to a decision by Gov. Jay Nixon. Nixon moved the annual Governor’s Prayer Breakfast from its traditional day of Jan. 6 to Jan. 5 because of a scheduling conflict that was “unavoidable,” according to Scott Holste, the governor’s press secretary. “We hope that with the governor’s schedule for future years that everything can be … [Read more...]
A dark day in the history of America … God help us
The repeal today of the so-called “Dont’ ask, don’t tell” policy in the military is a disturbing leap by America which has been creeping toward becoming a secular nation for a century. In so doing they ignored a letter from 94 organizations representing 40 million Americans urging them not to repeal the policy. Among the organizations opposing the repeal were the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest Protestant … [Read more...]

JEFFERSON CITY—The Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) has entered into discussions with the Baptist Convention of Iowa (BCI) about a closer relationship. MBC Executive Director David Tolliver on Dec. 13 shared details with the MBC Administrative Committee and sought their approval concerning a task force he would like to appoint to look into the matter, which is initially being called a partnership.
