August 14, 2024 By Benjamin Hawkins

JEFFERSON CITY – Missourians will vote, Nov. 5, on whether the right to abortion will be codified in their state's Constitution. The Missouri Secretary of State's office announced yesterday, Aug. 13, that pro-abortion advocates had gathered enough signatures to present their proposed state constitutional amendment to voters. (Read the proposed amendment here.) The WORLD News Group reported, Aug. 13, "If passed, the amendment would grant women in Missouri the right to abort their unborn … [Read more...]

Pray, give to see Scripture available in all languages

August 13, 2024 By Benjamin Hawkins

A few years ago, at the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting, the International Mission Board (IMB) gave Southern Baptists the opportunity to help provide Bibles for people groups across the globe—particularly, for people groups who don’t have access to Scripture in their heart languages. To mark the occasion, Southern Baptists who participated in this effort could highlight a verse from Scripture displayed in the IMB’s booth. My wife and I highlighted Revelation 5:6, which exalts … [Read more...]

‘We’re better together’: Southern Baptist Disaster Relief proves we are

July 16, 2024 By Benjamin Hawkins

Denominational leaders, when rallying the 47,000 autonomous churches of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) to work together for the proclamation of the gospel, often say, “We’re better together.” Few examples could prove the truth of this phrase better than Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR). Though SBDR has been rightly called the “third-largest disaster response group in the nation,” the work of this particular disaster response group isn’t coordinated by a type-A chief executive … [Read more...]

‘Long may our land be bright with freedom’s holy light’

July 3, 2024 By Benjamin Hawkins

As Independence Day rolls around each year, I think often about the young English Protestant Reformer John Frith, who was burned at the stake as a heretic on July 4, 1533. Why did he die? In short, he died because he refused to reject his biblical convictions regarding the Lord’s Supper and justification by faith alone. Frith lived and died in an era when few people could even conceive of the God-given liberties, expressed in the Bill of Rights, that United States citizens enjoy today. … [Read more...]

From addiction, prison to the ‘honor’ of fatherhood

June 17, 2024 By Benjamin Hawkins

EDITOR'S NOTE: This article was first published on Baptist Press here. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (BP) – When he left prison in 2009, John Stroup knew nothing about being a godly father. Stroup’s father died when he was only a toddler. He was raised by his mother, and many of the men in his life spent time behind bars. Living in poverty and desperate to keep a roof over their heads, Stroup began to sell drugs and give the money to his mother so they could pay bills and buy food. “My version … [Read more...]

Father’s Day reflections

June 15, 2024 By Benjamin Hawkins

On a Sunday morning in June 2010, I first heard the congratulatory phrase directed toward me. As I turned the corner at a Texas church where my wife served as children’s minister, a sprightly, elementary-aged girl cried out, “Happy Father’s Day, Mr. Ben!” I accepted the words with delight, since my wife and I had just learned we were pregnant with our first child. No one at the time knew it. But, when my wife and I finally told everyone, an elementary-aged boy – who was at the church every … [Read more...]

Missionaries murdered in Haiti, now laid to rest in Missouri

June 9, 2024 By Benjamin Hawkins

NEOSHO, Mo. – Christians across Missouri and around the nation continue to pray for Missouri Rep. Ben Baker and his family after his missionary daughter and son-in-law, Natalie and Davy Lloyd, were killed by gang violence in Haiti, May 23. The bodies of the young missionary couple were transported from Haiti to the Kansas City airport and, on May 31, driven to Neosho. As they arrived in Neosho, hundreds of men, women and children stood along the roadside to honor the missionaries. They … [Read more...]

May 31, 2024 By Benjamin Hawkins

JEFFERSON CITY – Sixty people have come to faith in Christ this spring through LIFE Outreach initiatives organized by churches and associations in Missouri and across the nation, in partnership with the Missouri Baptist Convention’s (MBC) Making Disciples team. Similar events in 2023 resulted in a total of 521 professions of faith in Christ. At two LIFE Outreach initiatives held this spring, thousands of men, women and children watched bike and motorcycle stunts performed by members of the … [Read more...]

‘Strong theology of joy’ needed in an ‘age of anxiety’

May 28, 2024 By Benjamin Hawkins

Two hundred years ago this month, on May 7, 1824, German composer Ludwig van Beethoven debuted his famous Ninth Symphony. In the symphony’s fourth movement, he used as lyrics an 18th-century poem best known in English as “Ode to Joy.” Then, in 1907, hymn writer Henry Van Dyke used Beethoven’s tune to praise the God of all joy. His famous lyrics are beautiful and timely: “Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love,” the hymn begins. Turning from praise to petition, it adds, … [Read more...]

Miracle leads to ministry

May 17, 2024 By Benjamin Hawkins

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article updates a story originally written in 2018, depicting the aftermath of a miracle in the life of one Missouri Baptist family. KANSAS CITY – Doctors spoke the word “miracle” after 10-year-old Xavier Cunningham fell face-first onto a meat skewer and survived. But in the aftermath of the miracle, the boy’s family have found grace upon grace and a passion for ministry. ‘It’s a miracle he’s even alive’ On Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, Xavier and two of his friends … [Read more...]

Missouri Governor signs House Bill 2634, defunding Planned Parenthood

May 13, 2024 By Benjamin Hawkins

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson, on May 9, signed a bill into law that defunds Planned Parenthood – more than this, a bill that prevents state funds from subsidizing the work of any abortion providers. According to House Bill 2634, it is “unlawful for any public funds to be expended to any abortion facility, or to any affiliate of such abortion facility.” “Our administration has been the strongest pro-life administration in Missouri history,” Gov. Parson said, according to a May 9th press … [Read more...]

‘In Jesus, there is life,’ MBC’s Fowler tells pro-life advocates at Midwest March for Life

May 1, 2024 By Benjamin Hawkins

JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Baptists are “staunchly, unapologetically pro-life,” Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) Executive Director Wes Fowler told an enthusiastic audience at the Midwest March for Life, May 1. Fowler was featured twice on the Midwest March for Life schedule, but he wasn’t the sole Missouri Baptist to take the stage during the rally. Alongside him were Brandy Meeks, president of the Vitae Foundation and a member of the MBC’s Christian Life Commission; and Susan Klein, … [Read more...]

Cultivating wisdom in a post-Christian culture

Harrison Lang

As American Christians in the 21st century, we have already fought many battles over political and cultural issues in the first quarter of this century. These battles have borne real fruit for the cause of Christ and the common good—whether the overturning of Roe v. Wade or the ongoing protection of religious liberty. Contrary to the doom some people have predicted, our nation has seen significant progress. That said, Christians must still engage the public square with confidence and discernment in Christ.
