BRANSON, Mo. – During their 191st annual meeting, Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) messengers celebrated their Great Commission partnership and were challenged to reach and baptize 8,000 new believers across the state in 2026. They also urged churches to continue fighting for the life of the unborn, and they adopted a task force report regarding “office of the pastor, specifically as it relates to a woman’s role in ministry.” Coming from 478 churches, 1,365 Missouri Baptist messengers … [Read more...]
‘If God spare my life’: English Scripture that Tyndale lived, died to translate turning 500 years old
COLOGNE, Germany – Five hundred years ago, English evangelical William Tyndale fled for safety from the city of Cologne, Germany. Catholic authorities were eager to arrest him and stamp out his work. His crime? Translating the Greek New Testament into the English language. It’s a goal he nearly achieved in 1525. Almost 22 chapters of Matthew’s Gospel had already come off the press when Tyndale was discovered by authorities. Chased out of Cologne, he fled to Worms, Germany, carrying with … [Read more...]
Amid incivility, reaffirm liberty of conscience
The assassination last month of Charlie Kirk brought many Americans face-to-face with a gruesome reality encountered all too often across the globe: namely, that a man might be killed simply for expressing what he believes to be true. “It would be a safe but sad bet that someone, somewhere in the world, is killing someone else at this very moment in the name of religion or ideology,” Os Guinness wrote in the first lines of his 2008 book, The Case for Civility. During the past century, … [Read more...]
Biblical view of suffering a bulwark against assisted suicide
Despite the attention that abortion rightly receives among pro-life advocates, the “culture of death” has expanded beyond the womb in Western societies. Consider this disturbing example: Cases of assisted suicide and euthanasia have mushroomed in Canada – where, according to the BBC, nearly one in 20 deaths were “medically assisted” in 2023. That is 15,300 deaths out of 320,000. And some Canadian government leaders are now proposing that euthanasia be available to children and teenagers, … [Read more...]
Pursue life of learning from God’s Word, works
“To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.” – Noah Webster A man of deep Christian faith, as well as one of America’s Founding Fathers, Noah Webster believed the education of children was essential for the newborn United States of America. By his example, he also displayed the value of lifelong learning. After all, … [Read more...]
The fight for life continues in Missouri
The fight for life continues in the state of Missouri. On July 3, according to a press release from Missouri Right to Life, “Jackson County Judge Jerri Zhang released a dangerous ruling for the 3rd time to remove almost all health and safety standards for abortions.” Zhang’s July 3rd ruling comes after the Missouri Supreme Court slapped down her previous efforts to strip away these health and safety standards. “Women’s lives are at great risk from an unregulated abortion industry,” … [Read more...]
Marriage: God’s wonderful, often controversial gift
Ten years ago this month, the U.S. Supreme Court illegitimately redefined marriage in the case Obergefell v. Hodges—illegitimately, that is, because a human court has no authority to redefine an institution put in place by God. Appropriately, thousands of Southern Baptist Convention messengers meeting in Dallas, June 10-11, called for the “overturning of laws and court rulings, including Obergefell v. Hodges, that defy God’s design for marriage and family.” They also urged the nation to … [Read more...]
MODR remains active; an Easter season prayer for protection
Missouri Disaster Relief (MODR) remains active this month. Not only are volunteer MODR teams still responding to the March 14th tornadoes, but they’ve been active in recent months responding to fires in California and last fall’s hurricane on the East Coast. They have worked, literally, from coast to coast. Then, early this month, tornadoes hit the state again. On April 4, MODR sent the following update about tornado response via email: “As many of you know, we’ve experienced significant … [Read more...]
During clinics in southern Mexico, El Salvador, Vision 3:16 ministry tops 80,000 people served
TEMAZCAL, Mexico – During a mission trip to southern Mexico in late January, an eyeglass ministry founded roughly 15 years ago by members of Concord Baptist Church, Jefferson City, celebrated 80,000 lives impacted during the ministry’s history. Domingo was the 80,000th person whose life was touched by the ministry, Vision 3:16. Beth Peeper, a Concord Baptist Church member and administrative assistant for The Pathway, participated in this mission trip and was privileged to meet … [Read more...]
Christian baptism can be costly, rewarding
Too often, we take for granted the biblical practice of believer’s baptism. Of course, we see it as something to celebrate, but we’re sometimes in need of a reminder about how important it really is, and why. Several years ago, a friend asked me about baptism – and not merely out of intellectual curiosity. He came from a Catholic background, and, though he had placed his faith in Christ, he was hesitant to accept believer’s baptism. To do so would come with costs. Likewise, I’ve known of … [Read more...]
Stand against ungodliness, celebrate fruitful ministry
During the past several years, opponents to biblical truth and morality have used Missouri’s initiative petition process to inject ungodliness into the state’s constitution. Last fall, Missouri pro-lifers faced defeat when pro-abortion Amendment 3 was taken to voters across the state—even though churches and pro-life agencies were outspoken in opposing this constitutional amendment. Similarly, recreational marijuana was unfortunately legalized in 2022 when it came before Missouri voters … [Read more...]
Pray for life, for elected officials, for the nations
For many years, I’ve loved reading about the lives of George Mueller and Brother Andrew – men whose ministries were built on prayer and whose hearts were brimming over with confidence in God’s faithfulness. Take Mueller, for example. According to Donald Whitney, professor of biblical spirituality at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Mueller founded orphanages in 19th-century England that ultimately cared for more than 10,000 children. “Yet,” Whitney writes, “he never made the needs … [Read more...]
