HOLTS SUMMIT – Nearly 10 years after standing before a judge on two felony and three misdemeanor charges, Missouri native Brandon Kiesling stood before an audience at Union Hill Baptist Church in March, proclaiming the gospel of God’s grace. Born in Latham and raised in California, Kiesling began as a high school student to drink alcohol, smoke marijuana and use methamphetamine. In August 2003, he was arrested for making meth, was soon bailed out of jail, and returned to drugs the next … [Read more...]
Freeway Ministries makes ‘missionaries’ of ex-cons
SPRINGFIELD – John Stroup sat in a prison cell when the gospel arrested his attention. Now, through a ministry he established with two other members of Crossway Baptist Church, Springfield, he strives to capture criminals for Christ. “I was raised in a drug-addict, drug-dealer environment,” Stroup said. “Everybody I knew is pretty much dead or doing life in prison.” In 2008, Stroup himself was serving time behind bars, when he found a Bible and began reading it. “I fell in love with God … [Read more...]

Every year, … [Read more...]
Learning from 1960s Revival
When Jim Breeden, director of missions, St. Louis Metro Association, gave me a copy of the newly reprinted book Indonesian Revival, by the late Avery Willis, I wasn’t expecting much. But Jim handed me a real gift. Indonesian Revival documented a people movement that occurred in 1966-68 in which two million Javanese came to faith in Christ. It’s not only a good read, but Avery based it on his doctoral dissertation at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. The trigger for the revival … [Read more...]

The church distributed 500 bags to households in the town of nearly 3,000 during the weeks leading up to the revival services. The bags contained the Gospel of John, a tract, an invitation to the “Hopefest” revival services, a letter about the church’s preschool program, a church pen and business card, some hard candy, and various … [Read more...]
Never surrender to flesh, ever-surrender to Jesus
Eating on the healthier side of the food pyramid is a battle for me. My pyramid is much more … shall we say … prismatic. And probably at least a heptagonal prism at that. I hear I’m not the only one. For those of us who struggle with food geometry, some days “diet victory” means we chewed the donut before swallowing it. (I would mention the “ring torus” here, but I’m really not that good at geometry.) That battle to eat well? That’s on the front lines. But related skirmishes break out … [Read more...]

Here’s offering four things disciple-making is not
Written by Mark Donnell, MBC Sunday School/Discipleship Specialist Editor’s note: The following is adapted from“Becoming a Disciple-Making Church,” by Steve J. Williams. It has been updated and is used by permission. This is the first of three articles. 1. Disciple-making is not a program. Some churches have equated discipleship and disciple-making with a church program for so long that it’s hard for them to think any other way. That’s too bad because biblical disciple-making is just too … [Read more...]
