NASHVILLE (BP) – On Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, America will observe the 20th Anniversary of 9/11. On this day, it seemed the world stopped as all eyes and hearts observed the horrific events that were occurring before us on live television. The events of 9/11 were shocking Terrorism struck our nation in a devastating manner. A total of 2,996 people were killed in America on that day, and more than 6,000 others were injured by the deadliest terrorist attack in world history. It was the … [Read more...]
Serve God where you are
EDITOR'S NOTE: Andy Helton serves as vice president of finance at the Missouri Baptist Children's Home. As things are slowly getting back to normal, I can’t help but think about the past year and a half. Our normalcy has been turned upside down and inside out and we were forced into a “new normal.” We all had a lot of time to reflect on missing the normal in our life. Some people have had some dark times and others have basked in the warm glow of the sun. I would also guess that some have … [Read more...]
Words that stick like glue
When people are working really hard to make a solid argument on an issue they’re passionate about, it’s easy to get frustrated. I still advise against trying to turn the argument around with “I’m rubber and you’re glue.” “Says you” doesn’t really do much for a person’s believability either. And anytime I’m trying to defuse a heated discussion, I try to remember that “I know you are but what am I” is not the best way to go either. Also, if I went with “takes one to know one,” wouldn’t I be … [Read more...]
Resolved to serve, educate, advocate
One of the joys of being a part of the Missouri Baptist Convention family of ministries is the partnership we enjoy with the churches. This partnership is exemplified during the board of trustee meetings. Our boards consist of members from our MBC family of churches. At this summer’s Baptist Homes & Healthcare Ministries board meeting I was privileged to reflect upon the words Paul as recorded in 1 Corinthians 15:57, “Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus … [Read more...]
Little ears are listening
“And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.” – James 3:6 (NKJV) How easy it is to forget that children are listening when we are talking informally. Why is it that adults will talk about children while they are nearby and act as though they think the children aren’t hearing what they say? “He’s having a hard time with school. I just wish he … [Read more...]
Lord, find us faithful
I prayed, “Lord, find us faithful stewards of the resources you entrust to our care.” Whether it is the assets of our family estate; or the above-the-tithe gift to a ministry the Lord is using; or encouraging our local church to tithe its offerings to the Cooperative Program; or leading our state convention toward maximizing our efficiencies and effectiveness for gospel transformation, I pray, “Lord, find us faithful stewards.” Is it possible that our gracious Lord would find us so … [Read more...]
Obadiah’s warning amid the Afghan disaster
We were preparing to depart Suwan, South Korea, in the spring of 1983. My Air Force unit, the 354th Tactical Fighter Wing out of Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, S.C., was completing a month-long training exercise to deter North Korean aggression. In the event of an attack on South Korea, our A-10 Thunderbolts (some call “Warthogs”) were tasked with suppressing North Korean ground forces, particularly armor. The day before we departed for home, officials in Suwan opened the base to the local … [Read more...]
Dispense with anti-trust flaws
The reason I was never Parent of the Year will shock some of you. It might even hurt your feelings a little. Because I’m pretty sure the biggest reason I never made the cut was that while my five kids were growing up, I never once made them eat liver. Not one time. Partly because I don’t know how to make it. Mostly though, it was because: sorry, but liver is gross. I didn’t make them eat liver because I was not willing to eat liver. Might as well admit that my kids were probably the only … [Read more...]
Pray for the Baptist Homes
The calling to serve Baptist Homes & Healthcare Ministries is a stewardship rather than a position. As a steward, one has the responsibility to ensure the proper resources are available, and the return is pleasing to the master. The root of the Latin word “resource” surgere, is the same as the word for source. Both mean to “arise.” As Christians, we do well to understand our needed resources arise from the Source. No wonder one of the names of God is “Jehovah-Jireh,” which is … [Read more...]
Help ministry thrive for years to come
I often joke that I know exactly what the stock market is going to do. I know it will go up, and I know it will go down – I just don’t know when. Which, of course, is the real trick; knowing when certain events are going to happen. What is true of the market is true in real life. We know we will die, or more accurately stated, we know our bodies will die, and our souls will be transported to another dimension. (The second part of that statement is intensely debated with some believing … [Read more...]
‘They gave themselves…’
As the brother read the obituary for the missionary couple, I heard him use the phrase from 2 Corinthians 8:5 – “They gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us by God’s will” (CSB). A powerful statement about the churches in Macedonia. The apostle Paul spent time there making disciples and now he praised these precious souls in a letter to a troubled church that was distracted from the mission. Paul was pleading with the Corinthian believers to follow through on their surrender to … [Read more...]
Freedom threatened as school year approaches
An administrator walked into a classroom and noticed a Bible on the teacher’s desk. Afraid the teacher might read it with students, the administrator ordered it hidden. The teacher could either comply or face disciplinary action. Discerning Missouri Baptists must be involved in school district decisions that could impact their children. Government-forced vaccinations and masking, the American Humanist Association’s campaign urging students to sit – not stand – during the Pledge of … [Read more...]
