U Church trusts God to transform community
KANSAS CITY – When vacant houses are widespread in a community, it’s detrimental to that community. Empty houses breed vandalism, prostitution, drug activity and other bad elements to an otherwise nice neighborhood. “We saw the vacant house epidemic and knew it was the biggest need, so we did something about it,” said Gary Cornelius Jones, pastor at The U Church in southeast Kansas City and member of the Missouri Baptist Convention Executive Board. The church partnered with a private … [Read more...]
Decade of Missouri baptism data mixed
JEFFERSON CITY – Ten years of baptism reporting by Missouri Baptist churches revealed some bright spots in the midst of overall declines. “Some tend to think that children are all that are being reached for Christ in Missouri,” said Mark Snowden, Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) Evangelism/Discipleship Strategist. “This report gives us reason to celebrate otherwise. At nearly 55 percent, children make up a big chunk, but it’s not overwhelming.” Data from the Annual Church Profile … [Read more...]

BREAKING: Bill to overturn Hobby Lobby decision on abortifacients stalls in Senate
Ben Johnson/LifeNews WASHINGTON, D.C. – A bill introduced by Senate Democrats to erode the religious liberty of Americans who object to abortion-inducing drugs or contraception has stalled. The Democrat-controlled body voted 56-43 to pass the bill, which would require business owners to offer contraceptives, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs to their employees with no co-pay, regardless of their religious views. However, the measure needed 60 votes to proceed, due to Senate … [Read more...]

Pastor won’t quit day job
ROGERSVILLE – Pastor Winston Burton of the First Baptist Church (FBC) here won’t quit his day job. In fact, this nearly 300-member congregation has chosen to employ only bivocational and part-time staff members – a decision that, according to Burton, has its advantages for ministry. “Lots of doors have been opened as a result of my being bivocational,” Burton said, sharing how his work in the school system helped him to build relationships within the community. “I’ve had people come to … [Read more...]

Clarifying the vision
I join a host of others who are so grateful for the new day dawning at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Jason Allen and his team are transitioning the seminary to the forefront of theological education. How? By reclaiming the priority of “why?” – doing everything they do “for the church.” In a recent blog post, Allen addressed with amazing clarity key issues that are foundational to the cooperative ministries that we do as Missouri Southern Baptists. I asked him for permission to … [Read more...]
Governor vetoes 72-hour waiting bill, override likely
JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed July 2 a bill that would extend the waiting period to get an abortion in Missouri from 24 to 72 hours. It now faces a likely veto override by the General Assembly in September. The bill passed the Missouri House 111-39 and the Senate 22-9. It takes two third to override a veto, a margin the bill would have if legislators’ votes remained the same. Pro-life legislators said the extended waiting period was appropriate given the magnitude of the … [Read more...]
