“Law may prescribe that the male nipples be made equal to the female ones, but they still will not give milk.” – Professor/author Allan Bloom In 1987, a University of Chicago professor wrote a book criticizing American higher education that jolted the American education establishment. The Closing of the American Mind spent several weeks on The New York Times Bestseller List, while it was met with praise from conservatives and ridicule from progressive liberals. In the book’s first … [Read more...]

Missouri bill addresses threat to religious freedom
I recently told a Missouri lawmaker, who advocated that LGBTQ rights take priority over freedom of conscience, that under no circumstances would Missouri Southern Baptists allow their First Amendment rights to be replaced with flimsy statutory “protection” by state law. The response: crickets. Ever cordial, I shook his hand as I departed. Negotiations ended. Only God – not the state – is Lord of the conscience. The free exercise of religion clause (freedom of conscience) in the First … [Read more...]
Media outrage explodes over governor’s ‘Christian values’ statement
Never has so much been said and written about so few words. Say something that the liberal news media dislikes and a piranha-like frenzy commences. Take, for example, words articulated by Gov. Mike Parson: “Missourians know that I share these beliefs and would not have nominated someone who does not share the same Christian values.” This “micro-aggression” triggered an outrageous onslaught, implying something patently false. It is yet another example of why the public does not trust the … [Read more...]
Grateful to Dr. McCullen for 20 years with The Pathway
Benjamin Franklin once said, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” For the past 20 years I have joined Pathway readers in being blessed by the Bible study lessons written by Dr. Jim McCullen. Now, at age 85, “Dr. J” as I have always affectionately called him, has earned the right to put his pen in the ink well for the final time. It has been a prolific pen, producing more than 600,000 words since we first started publishing his lessons in January 2003. … [Read more...]
Parental rights become priority for Mo. legislature
“I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.” Those words, spoken by Virginia Democrat gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe during a Sept. 28, 2021, debate sent shockwaves through taxpaying parent’s living rooms. Many believe it contributed mightily to McAuliffe’s defeat and could spell trouble for like-minded Democrats in the fall elections. McAuliffe’s remark reflects a view held by many Democrats and their constituents like the National Education … [Read more...]
Thanksgiving memories never to be forgotten
“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.” – Unknown Some of my fondest Thanksgiving memories are as a child hunting rabbits with Dad on Uncle Paul’s farm just north of Nashville, Tenn. We hiked across fields of brown fescue, contented with not seeing Bugs Bunny scamper across a red clay ditch, zig-zagging for self-preservation sake. There stood Dad, hound dogs barking, at the ready with DaddyHink’s (Granddaddy Hinkle) Stevens .16-gauge shotgun that … [Read more...]
Journalism that stands on the Word of God
An erosion of trust in the American secular news media continues. A September poll by Gallup revealed Americans’ trust in the media to report the news fully, accurately and fairly has fallen to just 36 percent, making this year’s reading the second lowest since Gallup began polling the matter in 1972. Only seven percent of U.S. adults say they have “a great deal” of trust in newspapers, television and radio news reporting. This is a dangerous development for a democratic republic like the … [Read more...]
Labelling Missouri parents as domestic terrorists?
On Oct. 4, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland wrote a memorandum threatening to mobilize federal law enforcement because parents are expressing their opinions at taxpayer-funded school board meetings. (I apologize for knocking you off your feet.) This provocation crosses a line rarely – if ever – seen on American soil. Missouri parents, bet you never thought you would be on the FBI’s “Most Wanted” list. Alas, this should not surprise us. The God-dishonoring, collectivists have been … [Read more...]
Abortionists are nervous ‘cats’ due to revamped federal courts
It feels like America is wobbling. We abandoned fellow Americans and our allies in the botched Afghanistan withdrawal/surrender. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff appears to have committed treason while undermining the Commander-In-Chief (the President). With Marxist ideas like Critical Theory and the “1619 Project,” our children are taught to hate America – and each other. The National Archives, which houses our founding documents, has placed “harmful content” labels on the U.S. … [Read more...]
Obadiah’s warning amid the Afghan disaster
We were preparing to depart Suwan, South Korea, in the spring of 1983. My Air Force unit, the 354th Tactical Fighter Wing out of Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, S.C., was completing a month-long training exercise to deter North Korean aggression. In the event of an attack on South Korea, our A-10 Thunderbolts (some call “Warthogs”) were tasked with suppressing North Korean ground forces, particularly armor. The day before we departed for home, officials in Suwan opened the base to the local … [Read more...]
Freedom threatened as school year approaches
An administrator walked into a classroom and noticed a Bible on the teacher’s desk. Afraid the teacher might read it with students, the administrator ordered it hidden. The teacher could either comply or face disciplinary action. Discerning Missouri Baptists must be involved in school district decisions that could impact their children. Government-forced vaccinations and masking, the American Humanist Association’s campaign urging students to sit – not stand – during the Pledge of … [Read more...]
Amid distrust, relativism, Christian journalism needed
Carrying the gospel to the ends of the earth is what unites Southern Baptists, along with the belief that the Bible is God’s inerrant, infallible and sufficient Word. Yet we find ourselves in an increasingly hostile nation. Such is the product of a society that denies absolute truth. It is a bitter pill to swallow, reminding us we live in a fallen world. Al Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., recently offered a sobering, accurate assessment: … [Read more...]
