CENTERVILLE—William (Bill) Enders, a member of First Baptist Church here, used his art to serve God and to bless others. Enders also found a way to continue that blessing after his death on July 11, 2011. He left several of his paintings of biblical themes to his home church. “We have quite a few of Bill’s paintings in the fellowship hall,” Pastor Bill Jackson said. “He’s also done some murals on the walls of some of the classrooms.” A close friend and member of First Centerville, Dwayne … [Read more...]
Anatomy of a name change
When the invitation of Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) President Bryant Wright came to serve on a task force dedicated to deliberating the possibility of changing the name of the SBC, I was thankful for the invitation and excited to serve with other men and women who care about the SBC. I was not sure what to expect, but I found myself surrounded by some of Southern Baptists’ brightest minds from a variety of regions, age groups and ethnic communities. It was a blessing to serve with them … [Read more...]

Cut and dry: A mess of my own making
I confess, I’ve done a bad thing. Logic warned me not to do it, but I did it anyway. I cut my own bangs. Every time I take the scissors into my own hands, I promise myself I’ll never do it again. That’s because I never fail to end up looking a little like Spock, minus the ears. And yet this is definitely no way to live long and prosper. When am I going to get it? I’m just not a skilled bang-cutter. When I try, I’m operating miles outside my area of expertise. The gal who cuts my hair, on … [Read more...]
Understanding GPS to reach your community
In 1993, the technology we know as GPS (Global Positioning system) became operational. It took the government $12 billion and several decades to design and launch the network of twenty-four satellites operated by the U.S. Air Force from five ground stations across the world. Today, GPS touches everyday life with built-in navigation in our cars and boats. Whether you are finding a restaurant on family vacation, hunting in the middle of nowhere, or just fascinated to plot your location while … [Read more...]
Sudbury church can be springboard to reach region
SUDBURY, Ont. – Since joining the Canadian Baptist National Convention (CNBC) a few months ago, All Nations Church here has quickly become one of the most vital components in the mission partnership between the CNBC and the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC). “We are seeing All Nations as a place where our partnering teams from Missouri can bounce out from,” said Gary Smith, senior church starting catalyst for the CNBC. He said there are several ways to serve alongside All Nations; ideal … [Read more...]
CP trending up
I carefully watch the giving trends of our Missouri Baptist churches. Since January, I am proud to say we have seen a marked increase in mission giving through the Cooperative Program (CP). I am grateful so many of our churches hold to the Acts 1:8 vision of reaching our state, nation and world through the cooperative ministries of the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) and the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). The trends are pointing up. Someone may be tempted to say, “Well, the increased … [Read more...]
Second Springfield’s act of generosity sets example
Acts of generosity are consistent with Scriptural living. The Bible gives us direction on this matter. In the Old Testament contributions were made to support the poor and in the New Testament the needy saints of the church. Deuteronomy 15:7-11 gives us the basic principle behind contributions. As God’s people, we are not to be tight-fisted, but rather offer aid to others with open hands. Leviticus 19:9-10 and 23:22 exhort the people of God to leave some of their harvest for the poor and … [Read more...]

KANSAS CITY – Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (MBTS) officials have announced a partnership with the Green Scholars Initiative offering MBTS’ ancient language students opportunities to research and publish their findings about one of the world’s oldest biblical texts that dates to the second century. Over the next 10-12 years, Midwestern biblical language professors and students will research, analyze and publish information from the earliest Greek texts of the book of Psalms, part … [Read more...]
Quest to reach all nations takes leaders to All Nations
SUDBURY, Ont. – The wide open spaces spanning between isolated cities and townships can make Canada’s Northern Ontario feel like one of the loneliest places on earth to do ministry. Such was the case for All Nations Church Senior Pastor Jeremy Mahood. “I felt alone out here all the time,” Mahood said. “I felt it especially in those years prior to our church’s growth, when our staff consisted of … well, me.” However, Mahood recently discovered that All Nations is not alone in its desire to … [Read more...]
Midwestern accreditation woes ‘baseless’
JEFFERSON CITY - Rumors that Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary may lose its accreditation are “baseless,” said the acting chairman of the Midwestern (MBTS) Board of Trustees. In a March 7 interview with The Pathway, Kevin Shrum, pastor, Inglewood Baptist Church, Nashville, Tenn., noted that MBTS is in “a pretty good place” financially despite the Feb. 10 resignation of R. Philip Roberts as president. Since March 1, the seminary has been led by an acting interim president, Robin … [Read more...]
Sensitivity in sharing a key in Canada
OSHAWA, Ont.—The top Eastern Canadian strategist in the Southern Baptist denomination said that while it is exciting that more Missouri Baptists are headed to Northern Ontario to be a part of a partnership to plant churches in Canada, they must avoid thinking that the lands are a lot alike. They are not. Gary Smith, senior church starting catalyst for the Canadian National Baptist Convention (CNBC), said the key to success for Missouri Baptists who hope to make an impact in the partnership … [Read more...]
