CAPE GIRARDEAU – No matter where you live, you’ll be less than a two-hour drive from an evangelism conference in February and March. In lieu of a single, large, statewide gathering, Missouri Baptists for the second year are invited to smaller, one-day “Festivals of Hope” Feb. 4 at Lynwood Baptist in Cape Girardeau; Feb 9 at Grover Park Baptist in Warrensburg; Feb. 11 at Boulevard Baptist in Springfield; March 3 at First Baptist in Macon; March 10 at Parkway Baptist in St. Louis; and March … [Read more...]
Relationship vision; the MBC’s future
It is sorta like a new marriage. The bride and groom think they know one another but it’s not until they publicly covenant together (they get married) that they start their life together and discover the differences that actually exist with different personalities becoming one. Sharon and I are breakfast people. As newlyweds, the first breakfast Sharon prepared for us was illustrative. I worked the night before at the General Motors plant and before I headed to class at Dallas Baptist … [Read more...]
Jefferson County’s Christmas generosity seems to know no limits
ARNOLD—Jefferson County may not be on the way to the North Pole, but several churches there know how to make children happy. First Baptist Church here works all year long to pack shoebox gifts for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child and, in addition to packing boxes, First Baptist Church of Festus/Crystal City serves as an area relay center to collect shoeboxes. First Arnold packed 1,993 boxes this year. “We gather supplies all year long,” Dana Clements, First Arnold member and … [Read more...]
Quality time with Jesus is just the right gift
I have to tell you, I’ve seen some pretty ghastly Christmas gift disasters over the years. Shouldn’t there be a buying guide that lists what not to buy? Sort of an “un-buying guide”? For women I think the un-buying guide should include anything that even remotely resembles a power tool. Vacuum cleaner bags—also a bad idea. Even the lavender scented ones. Another bad gift idea for women: A gift membership to the Guerilla Weight-loss Center. I’m pretty sure we should also include the special … [Read more...]
Children’s Christmas book was art teacher’s final gift
ST. LOUIS—Gretchen Claybrook left a legacy of love and giving. C. David Claybrook, retired pastor of several churches in the St. Louis metropolitan area including Riverview Gardens Baptist Church, is now sharing that legacy with others. Gretchen’s legacy is a Christmas children’s book, Let’s Decorate the Christmas Tree. She wrote and illustrated the book in the spring of 2010 before her death from pancreatic cancer on Jan. 2, 2011. Decorate the Christmas Tree is designed with a pop-up … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptists focus on Awaken 2012
JEFFERSON CITY—John Yeats, new executive director of the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC), said Awaken 2012, a national prayer emphasis Jan. 2-20 in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), is essentially his heartbeat. Yeats was part of the Louisiana Baptist Convention team that birthed the initiative. He and Claude King, who co-wrote “Experiencing God” with Henry Blackaby, co-edited the official Awaken 2012 Prayer Guide. A customized 42-page version is now available on … [Read more...]
New Cardinal manager unafraid to share his faith
ST. LOUIS – Mike Matheny has only been on the job at the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals for a few weeks, but the former catcher is no stranger to the team, nor to pages of The Pathway. Matheny has appeared in The Pathway speaking about his faith several times in his role in Christian Family Day at Busch Stadium. But his most recent appearance was giving his testimony and presenting the gospel in 2007 at “Manly Night” at West County Community Church, a Missouri Baptist Convention … [Read more...]
Operation Christmas Child processing center is vital hub
ST. LOUIS—Jim McCaughan, minister of missions here at Parker Road Baptist Church, and several other Missouri Baptists have one of the longest running seasons of ministry. For 14 years between Thanksgiving and Christmas, this group has traveled to an Operation Christmas Child Processing Center. “We started with just a few couples,” McCaughan said, “but this year we have more than 60 people going from three churches.” The Operation Christmas Child Processing Center is the last stop for the … [Read more...]
What I want for Christmas (for the MBC)
It’s that time of year! Time for “hinting” to those likely to provide what we want for Christmas. In reading Luke’s account of Christ’s birth, I began to think of what I want for Christmas in terms of God’s gifts to mankind 2,000 years ago. Further reflection led me to consider what I want our Heavenly Father to provide for Missouri Baptists this Christmas. After all, the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) is made up of churches, and every New Testament church is described in the Bible as … [Read more...]
Some Christmas musings to finish out another year
I have noticed in recent years how radio stations seem to be playing less of the traditional Christmas songs celebrating the birth of Jesus. No problem if listeners want to hear Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” or Gene Autry’s “Rudolph the Red-nose Reindeer.” However, if one wants to hear “Joy to the World” or “O Holy Night,” for the most part one has to turn to a Christian station. It hasn’t always been that way. When I was about eight-years-old mom and dad bought a new Motorola stereo … [Read more...]
Country store brings Christmas cheer
KIRKSVILLE – Forget Black Friday; the twelfth of December is the big shopping day this year for the residents of Kirksville Manor Care. That Monday was the day Fellowship Baptist Church here sets up their annual “Manor Christmas Country Store.” The church has been collecting new and like-new items that might appeal to people across all age ranges, and set them up a store-like setting so residents of Manor Care can shop for Christmas gifts for their families, just steps from their own rooms. … [Read more...]
SBU professor pens new text on Paul
BOLIVAR – Southwest Baptist University (SBU) professor of biblical study Rodney Reeves has released a new textbook on the Apostle Paul’s Christian walk, Spirituality According to Paul: Imitating the Apostle of Christ. The new book, published by IVP Academic, charts the Pauline themes of spiritual life based on Paul’s initial invitation in I Corinthians to “imitate” him as he follows Christ. In examining the arc of spiritual union with Christ through His crucifixion, burial and resurrection, … [Read more...]
