WHEATLAND – The thousands of people in the grandstands at the Lucas Oil Speedway will hear more than the National Anthem and the roar of stock cars rounding the dirt track; they’ll hear the gospel. The Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC), through a grant provided by the North American Mission Board (NAMB), is sponsoring an evening of races April 21 at the dirt race track in Wheatland. The name “Missouri Baptist Convention” won’t be seen anywhere, however. Instead, the night’s four races will … [Read more...]
‘We Care’ plan launched in Chicago
SHOREWOOD, IL – A staggering 2 million lost people live in the Three Rivers Baptist Association (TRBA) area of the Chicago suburbs. And Dan Eddington, director of missions for TRBA, cares deeply for all 2 million of them. He cares about their lives, their families, their spiritual and physical needs and especially their eternal destinations. His concerns led Eddington to develop the “We Care Campaign,” a ministry effort he hopes will demonstrate to nearby communities how much he, the … [Read more...]
New Year’s goals: Christ like, holy living
I start a new fitness routine around the first of every year—with several thousand of my like-minded and like-squishy American friends. The new routine usually begins with the ceremonial setting of the 1200-calories-per-day goal. It’s a moving ceremony with no small amount of tears, but at least there’s a goal. Of course, being the goal-oriented kind of person I am, by the second week I’m meeting my 1200-calorie goal without fail. I’m meeting it before lunch. But still, I like to think that … [Read more...]
Start right here, let us prepare our hearts for God
The English revivalist Gypsy Smith challenged his listeners to take a piece of chalk and draw a circle on the ground. Once the circle was complete, get inside the circle and pray, “Lord God, send revival and begin it right here in this circle!” We desperately need a movement of God’s Spirit in our day. As individuals, churches and a culture, we have insurmountable problems that our best human ingenuity cannot fix. We need the Lord to sweep into our churches in a fresh way. We need a great … [Read more...]
Batman and our own super powers
Somebody asked me what super power I would want if I could have any of them. I thought about it, and then I decided on Batman’s. Because as far as I can tell, Batman’s super power is this: having a fat boatload of money. That one just seemed the most reasonable. After thinking about it a little more, I decided it was entirely conceivable that I’ve already been bitten by a radioactive spider. It would have to have been a spider that had the spider super power of being a regular human. So … [Read more...]
Pastor’s wife develops hidden gift of writing
BUFFALO – God has given many gifts to Ashley Haupt, wife of First Baptist Church Pastor Tim Haupt, but one gift, her gift of writing, laid dormant for several years until it was confirmed recently by being published in the November 2011 issue of Lifeway’s Homelife Magazine. “I have always loved writing,” Haupt said, but she did not feel her writing was a gift God could use to impact the lives of others with the love of Christ. “Looking back, I see some signs that God had given a gift, but … [Read more...]
Do not give ‘to’ the Cooperative Program
Do not, under any circumstances, give your money to the Cooperative Program (CP). Seriously. I mean it. To many, I guess, this might seem odd since Frederick Boulevard, the church I pastor, gives 8 percent of our undesignated receipts through the Cooperative Program. Ahh, but there is the difference. Giving TO the CP, I think, is something entirely different than giving THROUGH the CP. The CP is undeniably an impressive vehicle to take our church’s money and help disperse it to missions … [Read more...]
First Arnold rejoices over K people fruit
WEST AFRICA—When taking the gospel to the ends of the earth, there is no “end of the road.” That is what one Missouri Baptist team member said while driving cross country for more than 90 minutes from any improved road to a new village. First Baptist Church, Arnold, is the missionary to the K people of West Africa. The K people are oral learners who are Muslim synchronistic with traditional African religions (witchcraft). They have no written language, and consequently there is no Bible in … [Read more...]
Saunders prepares to help build brand of faith event
ST. LOUIS—Shane Saunders believes in the mission of Faith and Family Day with the St. Louis Rams to the point where he plans on helping it grow with a year-long effort leading up to the event in the fall of 2012. Judy Boen believes in him, too. Boen is the driving force behind the Christian Family Day organization, which for years was anchored at Busch Stadium with the St. Louis Cardinals and which now is making inroads at the Edward Jones Dome with the Rams. She likes what Saunders brings … [Read more...]
First church takes shape in Africa
BOLIVAR—A church has been planted in the Western Gateway Cluster of the Sub-Saharan Affinity Group of the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) partnership by a team led by a graduate of Southwest Baptist University. James Shuler was recently ordained and is en route to a January ministry position as a pastor of discipleship under lead pastor Scott Watson at River Bluff Fellowship in Ozark. Shuler led the team in November that planted the church for the “S” people. The team that enjoyed success … [Read more...]
Baptists join forces to load trucks, help Joplin
JOPLIN—When Martha Kolstedt and Jill McCracken, Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) directors of Baptist associations in Dallas and Polk County, respectively, met for the first time, little did they know what God had in store for them and the churches they serve. As their mealtime conversation turned toward the tragedy in Joplin, a plan began to emerge. Each association had sent workers already to help clean up and rebuild the tornado-stricken area, and each had sent loads of clothing and … [Read more...]
