I carefully watch the giving trends of our Missouri Baptist churches. Since January, I am proud to say we have seen a marked increase in mission giving through the Cooperative Program (CP). I am grateful so many of our churches hold to the Acts 1:8 vision of reaching our state, nation and world through the cooperative ministries of the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) and the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). The trends are pointing up. Someone may be tempted to say, “Well, the increased … [Read more...]
Second Springfield’s act of generosity sets example
Acts of generosity are consistent with Scriptural living. The Bible gives us direction on this matter. In the Old Testament contributions were made to support the poor and in the New Testament the needy saints of the church. Deuteronomy 15:7-11 gives us the basic principle behind contributions. As God’s people, we are not to be tight-fisted, but rather offer aid to others with open hands. Leviticus 19:9-10 and 23:22 exhort the people of God to leave some of their harvest for the poor and … [Read more...]

Quest to reach all nations takes leaders to All Nations
SUDBURY, Ont. – The wide open spaces spanning between isolated cities and townships can make Canada’s Northern Ontario feel like one of the loneliest places on earth to do ministry. Such was the case for All Nations Church Senior Pastor Jeremy Mahood. “I felt alone out here all the time,” Mahood said. “I felt it especially in those years prior to our church’s growth, when our staff consisted of … well, me.” However, Mahood recently discovered that All Nations is not alone in its desire to … [Read more...]
Midwestern accreditation woes ‘baseless’
JEFFERSON CITY - Rumors that Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary may lose its accreditation are “baseless,” said the acting chairman of the Midwestern (MBTS) Board of Trustees. In a March 7 interview with The Pathway, Kevin Shrum, pastor, Inglewood Baptist Church, Nashville, Tenn., noted that MBTS is in “a pretty good place” financially despite the Feb. 10 resignation of R. Philip Roberts as president. Since March 1, the seminary has been led by an acting interim president, Robin … [Read more...]
Sensitivity in sharing a key in Canada
OSHAWA, Ont.—The top Eastern Canadian strategist in the Southern Baptist denomination said that while it is exciting that more Missouri Baptists are headed to Northern Ontario to be a part of a partnership to plant churches in Canada, they must avoid thinking that the lands are a lot alike. They are not. Gary Smith, senior church starting catalyst for the Canadian National Baptist Convention (CNBC), said the key to success for Missouri Baptists who hope to make an impact in the partnership … [Read more...]
Korean church planter cares for First People of Ontario
KENORA, Ont. – Building bridges is Jay Kim’s greatest mission in Northwest Ontario. For two years, Kim has served as a Nehemiah Church Planter among the First Nations People (Native Canadians). Painful scars from the past cause them to consider Christianity “the white man’s gospel.” “Most of them survive in their reserves, isolated from the major modern community and kill their time with the influence of alcohol and drugs,” Kim said. “They lost their future and hope. We lost the bridge of … [Read more...]

Duke will offer two addresses here March 29 during the Worldview Conference at Memorial Baptist Church. Duke, who has been with the ERLC since 1997, spoke March 6 … [Read more...]

Barbershop patrons stir a church plant
ST. LOUIS (BP) – You can tell a lot about a community from the inside of a barbershop. Just about everyone, at some time or another, needs a haircut. Yet, of all the patrons at the beauty and barbershop operated by Sean and Taquella Boone in metro St. Louis, one group stood out to the couple – young African-Americans who wanted no part of the traditional church. The Boones saw them every day. They needed to hear about Jesus, but most wouldn’t have felt comfortable in the aging churches … [Read more...]
CORE focuses on three ‘core values’
JEFFERSON CITY – Rick Hedger, partnership mission specialist for the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) answered the question, “what is a core value?” “Words like worth, importance and significance are used to describe the value of something,” he said. “It is possible that everyone has something in their life that is of value. That thing is of worth. It is important. It is significant to that person. In fact, they probably have multiple things that are of value to them. “When a group of … [Read more...]
