MBC Executive Board to meet in Kansas City, 8 to be honored

JEFFERSON CITY – The Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) Executive Board will meet immediately prior to – and immediately after – this year’s annual meeting at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center. The Oct. 28 meeting will be held at 1 p.m., at the hotel’s Empire A-B-C room. The board is scheduled to deal with committee recommendations and finalize the its report and recommendations to messengers at the annual meeting.

The board will also meet Oct. 30 at 12:30 in Empire A-B-C. The Committee on Executive Board Committees will bring its report as the board organizes for a new year and finalizes committee assignments. Orientation for eight new board members is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Eight retiring board members will be recognized at this year’s annual meeting. They are: Larry Atkins, pastor, Buckhorn Baptist Church, Laquey; Steve Betts, a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church, Rolla; Dean Bredbenner, a member of First Baptist Church, O’Fallon; Alice Chastain, a member of First Baptist Church, Polo; Marty Finch, a member of First Baptist Church, Winfield; Wayne Karrick, a member of Prairie Hill Baptist Church, Washburn; Robert Kimmis, pastor, First Baptist Church, Linneus; and Lynne Woods, Ramsey Creek Baptist Church, Louisiana.

In a sweeping First Amendment decision issued March 31, the United States Supreme Court removed a virtual gag on free speech which the state of Colorado had imposed on Christian counselors when talking to minors about their sexuality. The Chiles decision has immediate implications beyond Colorado—including within the state of Missouri.

Smiles turned to laughter as Doug Mickan, associate pastor of worship and music at Faith Baptist Church in Festus, introduced his friends.  Mickan was at Parkway Baptist Church in St. Louis for an Operation Christmas Child event. His friends live in a trunk and depend on him for a voice.
