JEFFERSON CITY—The Christian Life Commission (CLC) of the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) met April 19 at the Baptist Building and discussed some of the issues they want to address in the months leading up to the November election.
CLC Chairman David Krueger, pastor, First Baptist Church, Linn, emphasized that a joint resolution on prayer sponsored by Rep. Mike McGhee, R-Odessa, and passed last year will be a top priority. The prayer amendment will clarify what our rights are to pray in public places, he said, and help more citizens understand that they do have a right to pray in schools and other public settings.
Voter registration is another top priority. Plans were made to mail out voter registration packets in May, followed by voter guides for the primary and general elections. Coordination and synergistic integration of all of the CLC voter information with MBC and Pathway websites was also discussed.
As an action point, the MBC Executive Board in July will be asked to urge that Sunday, Oct. 7 be set apart as a day of repentance, humiliation, and prayer for the November election. Krueger said he will work on the details of this motion with CLC Lobbyist Kerry Messer. He added that a letter could be sent out in early September as a reminder.
The idea was proposed by one of the newer commissioners, Tammie Andrews, a member of First Baptist Church, Kearney.
“I think there’s a lot of potential in doing it on a Sunday,” Krueger said.
Commissioners also talked about bills of interest at the State Capitol. The current session of the Legislature ends May 18.
Commissioners heard reports on two recent big events in Jefferson City—the Religious Liberty Rally at the State Capitol and the Worldview Conference at Memorial Baptist Church. The full videotaped presentation of MBC Executive Director John Yeats speaking at the religious liberty rally was then shown in the conference room.
Upcoming events on the CLC radar include: Christian Home Week, May 13-19; Citizenship and Religious Liberty Sunday, July 1; and Social Issues Sunday, Aug. 5.
The next meeting of the CLC will be July 19.
