“Calling Down the Fire” is the theme of this year’s Pastors’ Conference which will be meeting on Oct. 24 just prior to the Convention in St. Charles Convention Center. The Pastors’ Conference will begin at 8:40 a.m. with pre-session music and 9:00a.m-4:30p.m. is the time of the conference. I am asking that you make this conference a matter of urgent prayer as I have asked the four men coming to proclaim God’s Word, to seek to bring us messages that will ignite our hearts for the glory of … [Read more...]
The idol of ease
This column was written by Melani Lenow and originally appeared on BiblicalWomen.com. It was finally the weekend after a busy week and an overall busy month. Early on Saturday was a pro-life event and I was debating whether to attend. In my heart, I feel strongly about this cause, but in my flesh I really wanted to sleep late. My flesh won out, and time after time I silenced my alarm. After all, I deserved a little rest, right? As it was nearing the “if I don’t get up now, there is no way … [Read more...]
Joy abounds from behind mask in viral video
DALLAS (Christian Examiner) – The non-stop hysterical laughter is so contagious it has people all over the world – an estimated 48 million or so – watching the 30-something woman in a Star Wars Chewbacca mask wondering how a kid’s toy could bring such joy. Candace Payne, whose May 19 viral Facebook video about purchasing the mask at a local department store and trying it on for the first time inside her car in the parking lot, has the attention not only of avid Star Wars fans, but also of … [Read more...]
Counselor lends professional ear in flood zone
PACIFIC – It’s not as glamorous as wielding a chainsaw or cranking through a few thousand meals a day, but chaplains are playing a role in Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief (DR) as volunteers bring help, hope and healing to St. Louisans in need. Rhonda Myers, a member of South Ridge Baptist in Jefferson City, is one of those lay chaplains. By day, she is a licensed professional counselor. But over New Years, she took her professional role, donned a yellow DR hat, and lent a friendly ear to … [Read more...]
Mendacious ‘journalism’ targets Tebow, prayer
As someone who has worked in the newsrooms of three significant daily newspapers, I can testify to the lostness that exists. The lostness often surfaces as hostility and ridicule – especially toward Christianity. In recent days Christians have witnessed a pair of incidents that were contemptuous, even cruel. The first involved former football star and television sports analyst Tim Tebow, the son of Southern Baptist missionaries who attends First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Fla. Tebow is … [Read more...]
Yeats highlights Missouri Baptist vision, mission
SPRINGFIELD – During the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) annual meeting here, Oct. 26, Executive Director John Yeats highlighted the reorientation of the MBC staff around a mission grounded in the historical purpose for which the convention was founded and around the MBC’s vision for the future. Yeats urged Missouri Baptists to embrace a sense of urgency as they engage a culture desperately in need of the transforming gospel of Jesus Christ. Starting two years ago, Yeats challenged the … [Read more...]
Franks urges Missouri Baptists to move forward
SPRINGFIELD – To promote forward thinking, Neil Franks looked back. Franks, pastor of First Baptist, Branson, gave the president’s address at this year’s Missouri Baptist Convention annual meeting, using a cleverly-filmed video and a throwback to his high school days to drive home his point. The video showed a man walking forward on a street, while the world moved in reverse around him. But then Franks showed the video the way it was filmed: the man walked backwards; he, not the people … [Read more...]
Ripken: Persecuted Christians see miracle of everday U.S. churches
SPRINGFIELD – The International Mission Board’s Nik Ripken opened a window on the realities facing persecuted believers worldwide and on the way those believers view American Christianity during the Missouri Baptist Convention annual meeting, Oct. 28. “There is no free church and persecuted church,” Ripken said. “There is just the church. And it is always persecuted and it is always free. And when any part of your body is hurting and you’re not aware of it, and you’re not concerned about … [Read more...]
Floyd: Cry out for ‘unprecedented move of God’
SPRINGFIELD – As the MBC Annual Meeting concluded, Ronnie Floyd, president of the Southern Baptist Convention and pastor of Cross Church, Springdale, Arkansas, spoke to the messengers. His sermon was titled “Moving Forward in God’s Power.” Floyd said missions organizations, state conventions, associations can drift away from their central purpose. “The danger is they lose sight of their priorities and focus, drifting away from God’s mission and power,” he said. He told of the Great Prayer … [Read more...]

Overall MBC baptisms fall, ‘Pacesetter’ churches recognized for success
JEFFERSON CITY — A decline in baptisms around the state continued in 2014, despite the efforts of numerous churches, including those recognized by the Missouri Baptist Convention’s evangelism-discipleship team as “Pacesetters” in total annual baptisms. According to the Annual Church Profile, Missouri Baptist churches reported 8,248 baptisms in 2014, a statistic that shows a drop from the 9,706 baptisms reported in 2013 and the 10,364 reported in 2012. This is in keeping with a nearly … [Read more...]
