A U.S. Federal Court magistrate found no evidence of misconduct in last year’s sale of Glorieta Baptist Conference Center to a Christian camping ministry. The judge’s 79-page document filed yesterday (Sept. 4) recommends dismissal of all claims in a lawsuit filed against LifeWay Christian Resources, the Southern Baptist Convention and its Executive Committee, and Glorieta 2.0, the ministry that bought Glorieta from LifeWay last September. “The judge’s recommendations could not be more … [Read more...]
Atheists’ win could help churches
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (BP) – An atheist group reached a settlement last month with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) over stronger enforcement of policies against “church politicking,” and at least one religious freedom group voiced optimism, claiming the IRS investigation could be “a good thing” in the long run. Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) has been campaigning to overturn the portion of the tax code that prohibits nonprofit organizations from “intervening in political campaigns as a … [Read more...]

Lawmakers will gather in Jefferson City Sept. 10 for this year’s veto session. They will consider overriding vetoes of two pro-life bills by Gov. Jay Nixon. The first veto was of legislation that expands the waiting period for having an abortion from 24 hours to 72. Under current state law, woman … [Read more...]

Adam’s sin root cause of unrest in Ferguson
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) – On Aug. 9, Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old African-American, was shot six times by Darren Wilson, a white Ferguson police officer. His family has called for justice in his shooting while urging residents of Ferguson to abstain from violence, but many African-Americans and some whites have taken their anger to the city’s streets in protest. As an African-American Christian, my first reaction to this sad story of a young man’s life cut short consists of anger … [Read more...]

TWISP, Wash. – Patty Wetzel already knew the life-altering devastation that can come when fire strikes her home. She remembers well the night 37 years ago—as a young mother—when she and her family were forced to flee their burning home while still in their pajamas. Her family lost “everything” that night. Last month fear gripped her as she was given 20 minutes to leave her Twisp, Wash., home before the fire she could already see in the horizon reached her property. “It was just pure … [Read more...]

‘Submissive Wife’ recounts her experiment
COLORADO SPRINGS (BP) – Sara Horn’s “70s-era parents” raised her to believe that she could do or be whatever she wanted. “Strong, independent, graceful, assertive, understanding – these descriptors I preferred. “Submissive sounds weak,” Horn, author, speaker, military wife and mom, said in a Focus on the Family radio interview. “For a long time I didn’t even want to look at those passages in the Bible that talk about submission.” Horn recounted her one-year experiment chronicled … [Read more...]
