Southern Baptist DR exemplifies national cooperation

November 12, 2024 By Tharran Gaines

JEFFERSON CITY – The Apostle Paul explains in 1 Cor 12:12, “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.” He goes on to say in verse 27, “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” So it is with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief. Some volunteers are chaplains, some maintain the shower and laundry units, and some prepare meals. In the meantime, others provide flood recovery or operate a chainsaw. In … [Read more...]

Missouri DR volunteers help IMB missionary after tree falls on stateside home in Georgia

October 14, 2024 By Tharran Gaines

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Hurricane Helene was described by one official as a 400-mile-wide tornado, … which isn’t too far from reality. So, even though Asheville, N.C., has gotten much of the media’s attention, there’s been no less damage in neighboring states. That’s certainly the case in Augusta, Georgia — just 180 miles from Asheville — where volunteers with Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief (MODR) have been working since Sept. 26.  “I would describe it as one big debris field,” said Toby Tucker, … [Read more...]

People needed food and each other. They found it on a pastor’s back deck.

October 8, 2024 By Scott Barkley

FAIRVIEW, North Carolina (BP) – Cane Creek starts as a trickle up in the mountains from Stacy Harris’ home. Garren Creek and Flat Creek are there too. Typically, they create the small, crystal-clear pools trout love and cascading waterfalls that are favorites of Smoky Mountain tourists. Their appearance began to change nearly two weeks ago when heavy rain saturated the area. Then Hurricane Helene arrived on Friday, Oct. 4. People in Fairview Township, where Harris is pastor at Trinity of … [Read more...]

(BP) — Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief coordinator Dwain Carter said Saturday that the response in the wake of Hurricane Helene’s rampage through Georgia would be an “all hands on deck effort.” Carter said a huge area of the state has been affected by the storm, with effects ranging from wind damage to flooding, and loss of power and communications. As many of the GBDR’s 1,100 volunteers as are able to respond will be activated in the … [Read more...]

Missouri DR teams respond to Hurricane Francine

September 13, 2024 By Tharran Gaines

BATON ROUGE, La. (MODR) – Even though Hurricane Francine quickly subsided to a tropical storm after it made landfall in Louisiana, that doesn’t mean it didn’t have a devastating impact on hundreds of southern Louisiana residents. Having come onshore as a Category II hurricane on Sept. 11, it still left hundreds of people without power or with damage to homes and property. In response, Missouri Disaster Relief (MODR) teams arrived in Louisiana within 24 hours of landfall with two of the … [Read more...]

MODR Hay Shipments to Texas Help Both Animals and Fire Victims

April 2, 2024 By Tharran Gaines

TEXAS PANHANDLE – Disasters come in all forms and sizes; and, on occasion, affect more than the humans who have been impacted. That was certainly the case earlier this year in the Texas Panhandle, where range fires burned an estimated 850,000 acres in two days and impacted nearly 65,000 head of cattle. As Scottie Stice, State Director for Southern Baptist Texas Convention's Disaster Relief Ministry, explained, nearly 7,000 head of cattle were killed in the fires. And while some farmers … [Read more...]

Missouri DR sends team to help with relief efforts after Maui wildfire

December 13, 2023 By Dan Steinbeck

LAHAINA, Maui, Hawaii – In the past, a trip to Hawaii frequently meant the start of a dream vacation. That hasn’t always been the case, though, since a massive wildfire swept through the town of Lahaina earlier this year. In response, Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief was deployed to Hawaii, Nov. 8-22, to help in one of the areas devastated by the summer wildfires that claimed at least 100 lives. Chris Houghtaling, from First Baptist Church of Blue Springs, set up the first team of 11 … [Read more...]

Missouri DR collegiate interns assist Texas Tornado victims

July 19, 2023 By Tharran Gaines

PERRYTON, Texas (MODR) – Having grown up in Puerto Rico before moving to Pennsylvania, Joyce Fernandez had never witnessed the aftereffects of a tornado. Granted, the damage from hurricanes in her native country can be pretty devastating; but there’s often advanced warning, allowing people to prepare. That wasn’t the case in Perryton, Texas, where a tornado killed three people, injured at least 75 more and destroyed as many as 200 houses. In many cases, the only thing volunteers were able … [Read more...]

Cultivating wisdom in a post-Christian culture

Harrison Lang

As American Christians in the 21st century, we have already fought many battles over political and cultural issues in the first quarter of this century. These battles have borne real fruit for the cause of Christ and the common good—whether the overturning of Roe v. Wade or the ongoing protection of religious liberty. Contrary to the doom some people have predicted, our nation has seen significant progress. That said, Christians must still engage the public square with confidence and discernment in Christ.
