April 14, 2014 By Vicki Stamps

ARNOLD – “Heaven’s Anglers,” a Christian fishing club, has found a way to help children while promoting their sport. On May 31, Heaven’s Anglers will hold the 12th annual “Help a Child” Charity Fishing Event at Mark Twain Lake in northeast Missouri. “We’ve designed an event to share God’s Word and to fish,” said Gary Hollern, president of Heaven’s Anglers and member of First Baptist Church, Arnold, “all while fundraising for children.” The charities helped by the fishing event are the … [Read more...]

Holocaust survivor speaks at HLGU

April 13, 2014 By Brian Koonce

HANNIBAL – Eva Mozes Kor doesn’t mind talking about the nine months she and her twin sister spent in Auschwitz during World War II. She openly shares about inhumane experiments by infamous Dr. Josef Mengele. She matter-of-factly tells of watching as other Jewish children were shot as the Allies drew closer to the concentration camp. But, all things considered, she’d prefer to talk about forgiveness. Kor spoke for nearly two hours at Hannibal-LaGrange University March 28 to a packed house … [Read more...]

Yeats: Conviction and compassion

April 10, 2014 By John Yeats

This year’s Missouri Baptist Convention Worldview Conference was an extraordinary experience. Because it was held on the campus of Hannibal-LaGrange University, many students engaged in thought-provoking dialogue with the program personalities and participants. I’m encouraged by the thirst of the next generation to learn about engaging the culture from a faith perspective. One of the takeaways from the conference was the message from every speaker about the value of speaking and … [Read more...]

BSU equipping disciple-makers

April 2, 2014 By Benjamin Hawkins

MARYVILLE – Because of his early struggles as director of a Baptist Student Union (BSU), Jason Yarnell now labors not only to share the gospel to students at Northwest Missouri State University, but he also wants to send them out as disciple-makers – and, in some cases, campus missionaries like himself. Transformed by the gospel after attending a BSU rally as a student at Northwest Missouri State, Yarnell soon began to sense a calling to college ministry. Then, after the college’s BSU … [Read more...]

HLGU conduct code, former student make local news

March 30, 2014 By The Pathway

HANNIBAL – Hannibal-LaGrange University (HLGU) was in the news last week in St. Louis and the tri-state area when a gay student came to media saying the school denied him readmission after he publicly confirmed his homosexuality. Chase Martinson, a 20-year-old nursing student from Jefferson County, attended HLGU for two years, but had left the school due to illness. He applied for re-admission and was initially accepted in January, but later received a letter saying that his application … [Read more...]

EUREKA – Handmade dolls that have often been used during mission trips are now being made for Disaster Relief chaplains to give to victims. Jay Ryan, wife of Missouri Valley Director of Missions, and state chaplain trainer Patrick Ryan said the pattern for the doll came from the Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) around 2009. Jay said one lady asked her to get the pattern for the doll. Patrick asked WMU if they wanted to do this. Patrick Ryan said he originally got the idea from a First … [Read more...]

McCrary challenges SBU community to live a missional lifestyle

March 21, 2014 By Contributing Writer

By Charlotte Masch, SBU Director of Marketing and Communications BOLIVAR, Mo. — Larry McCrary issued a challenge during Southwest Baptist University chapel service March 5 to students, faculty and staff to live a missional lifestyle, making disciples wherever they “live, work and play” anywhere in the world. “Being salt and light every day is a great way to be a witness to everyone we meet,” he said. “The command is not go, but the assumption is ‘as you go.’” McCrary said a … [Read more...]

Call to prayer: Where are all the godly men?

March 17, 2014 By Contributing Writer

KANSAS CITY – Where have all the godly men gone? These days I ponder that question with increased frequency and concern. If the lack of godly men were only a matter of personality or ministerial preference, then little would be lost. Such is not the case, though. The church is in great need of awakening and renewal and, in the spirit of English Puritan leader Richard Baxter, its greatest need might well be godly men. Not that long ago, “man of God” was a common and honored descriptor … [Read more...]
