The promotional materials for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for international missions are out in circulation. This time of year, our Missouri churches often use the materials for promoting a week of prayer for our 3,800 international SBC missionaries, or some churches host a missions event that promotes all levels of missions – international, domestic, state and associational missions. One of the stories in the packet especially caught my interest because of Missouri Baptists’ … [Read more...]
Missouri DR intern shares Jesus in Houston, earns college credits back home
MARYVILLE – Maddy Atwell spent her entire summer preparing for a disaster that never came. A member of Laura Street Baptist Church and a collegiate intern for Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief, she spent her summer training to respond however she was needed, whether in mass care, childcare, laundry, mudout, chaplaincy chainsaw or incident command. And while nobody would complain about a disaster-free summer, it was a little bit ironic when the wettest hurricane on record hit Houston … [Read more...]
‘God is real,’ Harvey survivor blesses Mo. DR workers with testimony
TEXAS CITY, Texas – Days spent responding to Hurricane Harvey were long, humid and exhausting. But ask any one of the hundreds who answered the call to bring help hope and healing, and they would most likely say the sacrifice was worth being a blessing to someone else in need. Often times, in fact, they are the ones who come away blessed. Such is the case of those volunteers who were fortunate to meet Maria Renovato and hear her testimony one evening. “Before the Hurricane,” she told the … [Read more...]
Hard, hot mudout work yields one-on-one ministry
TEXAS CITY, Texas – Rosalie Archer-Knehans never goes on a disaster relief job without a Bible, even if the person they’re serving is already a believer. One such survivor of Hurricane Harvey God had in store for Archer-Knehans was Elesia. Though she had been rescued by boat, water only got up three or four inches into house. Still, Archer-Knehans saw it as a God-made appointment. “She just needed someone to love her,” she said. “She was broken, alone and had lost her joy.” … [Read more...]
Interim DR leader Parry gets trial by fire during Harvey
JEFFERSON CITY – When Dwain Carter, the director of the Mission Baptist Convention’s disaster relief program left to take on a similar role in Texas, he knew he was leaving the ministry in capable hands. Tamara Parry, a member of Union Hill Baptist Church, Holts Summit, had served as the DR ministry assistant for three years and was ready and willing to step into the interim role. Then, just two weeks into her new responsibilities, the most destructive hurricane in U.S. history made … [Read more...]
Running ‘for’ the disaster: Runner raises money for Mo. Disaster Relief
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – While nearly everyone in their right mind is running away from a disaster, Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers are the ones who run toward it. Now Adam Stoddard, a Missouri Baptist Convention church planting catalyst is running not from or to the disaster, but for it. Stoddard is a trail runner, and hopes to raise at least $3,000 for Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief through his upcoming trail run Sept. 23. But forget a 5K or even a 26.2-mile marathon: Stoddard’s goal is … [Read more...]
100 percent of MBC DR gifts go to disaster ministry
HOUSTON – People are eager to give to those in need after natural disasters like Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, but donators are increasingly eyeing charities’ practices to ensure that their gift provides the biggest benefit for the dollar. On that note, Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief (DR) thrives on donations directly to the ministry and through the Missouri Missions Offering (MMO). Of those funds, 100 percent goes to bringing help, hope and healing to those facing a disaster. No part of … [Read more...]
DR training continues as volunteers mobilize
HANNIBAL – Disaster Relief participants are taught to “be flexible.” The mantra was practiced in training September 8-9 at Calvary Baptist in Hannibal when there were ample reasons to cancel the training. To wit: The training fell between Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and between state disaster relief directors. Four regular session leaders were deployed or returning from Hurricane Harvey relief in Texas. A fifth was cross training in another facet of Disaster Relief. Acting state director … [Read more...]
Missouri volunteers gear up for Houston hurricane, MBC Exec. Yeats pleads for prayer
HOUSTON, Texas - Even as the Hurricane Harvey’s waters continue to rise in Texas, Missouri Baptist disaster relief volunteers are prepping to bring help, hope and healing to those affected by the flood. A mass care (feeding) unit is on standby to head south as soon as roads are clear, and they need at least 20 more volunteers for the first week of operations. “As long as you're DR trained, you are eligible to serve,” said interim disaster relief coordinator, Tamara Parry. “You do not … [Read more...]
Mo. Missions Offering supports WMU, disaster relief
JEFFERSON CITY – The Rheubin L. South Missouri Missions Offering supports 18 ministries in Missouri. This year’s theme is taken from 1 Cor. 3:9a (KJV): “For we are labourers together with God.” Following are two short stories of how the gifts of Missouri Baptists support missions projects throughout the Show Me State. Missions Meets Adventure It’s an annual adventure. Boys from across Missouri gather for RA Congress to compete in archery, riflery, and many other events. The 400 in … [Read more...]
MBC’s Dwain Carter leaving Missouri, headed to Texas
JEFFERSON CITY - Dwain Carter – who has served as Missouri’s director of disaster relief (DR) for more than five years – is stepping down from his role and “following the call of God on my life” as he and his wife move to Texas. Carter notified DR volunteers in an Aug. 2 email of the change, effective Aug. 15th. “Thank you for all your support over the past 5 + years as I have served the best I could as the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) DR Director,” he wrote in the email. “We … [Read more...]
Despite lack of disasters, DR interns soldier on through summer’s heat
JEFFERSON CITY – The unofficial motto for Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief is be flexible, be flexible, be flexible. That motto extends to this summer’s DR interns, even when disasters seem to be few and far between. Five college students are serving through the middle of August as disaster relief interns, and in a twist from recent years, all of them are young women. Living in what can be charitably called spartan conditions for the summer and on call 24-7, the quintet trained in all … [Read more...]
