Divine interruptions

May 27, 2014 By Rob Phillips

MBC Executive Director John Yeats was part of a six-person team of Missouri Baptist volunteers on Gibitngil last month. He reflects on God’s sovereignty in the midst of uncertainty: “Divine interruptions are the handiwork of God and we have to learn to listen. For example, just prior to this trip, we learned that my wife Sharon will most likely have a surgical procedure when we return. The outcome will be huge and it could have derailed our participation on this mission. “Then we learned … [Read more...]

Learning from 1960s Revival

May 17, 2014 By Mark Snowden

When Jim Breeden, director of missions, St. Louis Metro Association, gave me a copy of the newly reprinted book Indonesian Revival, by the late Avery Willis, I wasn’t expecting much. But Jim handed me a real gift.  Indonesian Revival documented a people movement that occurred in 1966-68 in which two million Javanese came to faith in Christ. It’s not only a good read, but Avery based it on his doctoral dissertation at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.  The trigger for the revival … [Read more...]

Diana Chandler/Baptist Press KIEV, Ukraine (BP) – The Ukrainian crisis has kindled an interdenominational prayer movement in the nation, said a Southern Baptist evangelist who ministers there and has accepted an invitation from Ukrainian Baptists to preach on a national day of mourning in Kiev. Ukrainian Christians believe only God can protect the nation from Russian control in the midst of upheaval that led to the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych in February, said Michael Gott, who … [Read more...]

First Gallatin ministers to ‘thirsty’ Haitian village

May 2, 2014 By The Pathway

GALLATIN – Wisny Exima says “thank you” in a most meaningful way. The gospel preacher from Haiti led the morning worship service at First Baptist Church, here, March 30, by giving thanks for a most precious commodity: water. In his mountainside community of Ma Rouge, there has been no rainfall since October. Yet during this five-month period, the Haitian people there have had water to meet their needs due to a gift from First Baptist Gallatin. Originally, a $10,000 donation was sent to the … [Read more...]

Cultivating wisdom in a post-Christian culture

Harrison Lang

As American Christians in the 21st century, we have already fought many battles over political and cultural issues in the first quarter of this century. These battles have borne real fruit for the cause of Christ and the common good—whether the overturning of Roe v. Wade or the ongoing protection of religious liberty. Contrary to the doom some people have predicted, our nation has seen significant progress. That said, Christians must still engage the public square with confidence and discernment in Christ.
