NASHVILLE (BP) – New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary Professor Jim Parker sees a recently-uncovered proclamation from early Christians as very much a current mandate for today’s believers. The Megiddo Mosaic refers to an ancient flooring discovered during excavations in 2005 near the Megiddo prison in northern Israel. Dating back to the third or fourth century, it included the phrase “God Jesus Christ,” thus predating Christianity’s official recognition as a religion. The … [Read more...]
Report shows medical missions trip yields surprising results
Short-term volunteer mission projects can make a long-term impact. The key, according to International Mission Board missionaries Cade and Ginny Wheeler, is for the local church to be fully invested and use volunteers within an already existing strategy. After Armenian Baptists hosted a Serve Tour of mostly 50 medical volunteers from the United States and Greece, they reported their work advanced at a faster rate less than a year after the joint mission trip through Send Relief and IMB … [Read more...]
Apologist: proclaiming the Resurrection needs to be consistent
EDITOR'S NOTE: This article includes additional reporting by The Pathway. DALLAS/KANSAS CITY (BP) – Jeremiah Johnston says the seminal event in Christianity’s history should be raised up more often. “The Resurrection of Jesus is tragically under-taught, under-preached, and as a result, under-appreciated and under-applied by the vast majority of Jesus followers and pastors today,” Johnston, associate pastor of apologetics and cultural engagement at Prestonwood Baptist Church, told … [Read more...]
Our once and future glory
This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. The Bible speaks of at least four phases of glory for Christians: glory now, glory in death, glory in resurrection, and glory in the restoration of the cosmos. We explore the first two in this column, and the final two in future columns. Glory now It’s our Christian duty to glorify God. As we honor the Father, Son, and Holy … [Read more...]
The First Hymn: Resurrected third-century praise song set for pre-Easter release
LA MIRADA, Calif. (BP) – What was left of the hymn, archeologists found 100 years ago in ancient Egyptian ruins on a scrap of tattered papyrus, long buried by desert sand. The discovery was sealed in a climate-controlled vault at Oxford University until John Dickson came along. Dickson, who joined Wheaton College in 2022 as the inaugural Jean Kvamme Distinguished Professor of Biblical Studies and Public Christianity, began to realize the importance of the papyrus for today’s … [Read more...]
MODR remains active; an Easter season prayer for protection
Missouri Disaster Relief (MODR) remains active this month. Not only are volunteer MODR teams still responding to the March 14th tornadoes, but they’ve been active in recent months responding to fires in California and last fall’s hurricane on the East Coast. They have worked, literally, from coast to coast. Then, early this month, tornadoes hit the state again. On April 4, MODR sent the following update about tornado response via email: “As many of you know, we’ve experienced significant … [Read more...]

Based in England, Belle coursed through flak-filled skies … [Read more...]
Christian baptism can be costly, rewarding
Too often, we take for granted the biblical practice of believer’s baptism. Of course, we see it as something to celebrate, but we’re sometimes in need of a reminder about how important it really is, and why. Several years ago, a friend asked me about baptism – and not merely out of intellectual curiosity. He came from a Catholic background, and, though he had placed his faith in Christ, he was hesitant to accept believer’s baptism. To do so would come with costs. Likewise, I’ve known of … [Read more...]
What no one tells you when you’re building a culture of prayer
How long does it take to create a culture of prayer in a church? No matter how much your church needs a culture of prayer, it won’t happen after a single sermon on prayer, or an announcement of your vision or one dynamic prayer meeting. Have you ever visited Mount Rushmore in South Dakota? The enormous memorial to four presidents – Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt and Lincoln – whose realistic likenesses are all carved into a mountain side, took about eight years longer to complete … [Read more...]
Protestant pastors bring attention to global Christian persecution
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (Lifeway Research) – As pastors speak and pray with their congregations, they say they’re also keeping persecuted Christians around the world in mind. More than 9 in 10 U.S. Protestant pastors (93%) say their church has engaged in at least one of six ways to bring attention to Christians suffering persecution within the past year, according to a Lifeway Research study. Around 1 in 14 (7%) say they haven’t done any of those six, and less than 1% aren’t sure. “The United … [Read more...]
Everyone’s day of reckoning
This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. One day, every person is resurrected and summoned before Christ in final judgment. While salvation is a gift of God, received by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, our lifestyles reflect our beliefs. That is, our words and deeds reveal our citizenship, either in the kingdom of God or in the domain of the evil … [Read more...]
