This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. The glorified body of Jesus easily navigates a world still under the curse of sin. After his emergence from the tomb, Jesus eats, travels, speaks with befuddled eyewitnesses of his resurrection, passes through closed doors, transports himself instantly from one location to another, and finally launches from the Mount of Olives … [Read more...]
State of the Bible: Scripture aids human flourishing, but U.S. lags globally
PHILADELPHIA (BP) – Scripture engagement, church involvement and an active faith increase human flourishing, the American Bible Society (ABS) said in its latest chapter of the State of the Bible utilizing Harvard University’s human flourishing index. But the United States ranked 15th among 22 countries studied on Harvard’s Global Flourishing Index, trailing the top five countries of Indonesia, Mexico, the Philippines, Israel and Nigeria. The U.S. rose to 12th place when factoring in … [Read more...]
Marriage: God’s wonderful, often controversial gift
Ten years ago this month, the U.S. Supreme Court illegitimately redefined marriage in the case Obergefell v. Hodges—illegitimately, that is, because a human court has no authority to redefine an institution put in place by God. Appropriately, thousands of Southern Baptist Convention messengers meeting in Dallas, June 10-11, called for the “overturning of laws and court rulings, including Obergefell v. Hodges, that defy God’s design for marriage and family.” They also urged the nation to … [Read more...]
Amendment on role of women in pastoral ministry fails to achieve 2/3 vote
DALLAS (BP) – A proposed amendment to the SBC Constitution stating the office of pastor should be held only by men was rejected by messengers, receiving approximately 60 percent of the vote, but not reaching the required two-thirds marker. The motion was brought forward by Juan Sanchez, senior pastor of High Pointe Baptist Church in Austin, Texas. With 5,632 ballots cast Wednesday (June 11), 3,421 messengers (60.74 percent) voted for its passage, and 2,191 (38.9 percent) voted against. … [Read more...]

What is truth?
“What is truth?” I’ll never forget the first time I was asked that question. I was at a Christian University’s Welcome Weekend hosting a church booth and had a sign that said, “We’re serious about truth.” After the students and noise died down and I started packing my things, a janitor timidly meandered over to my table and asked me an unforgettable question—“What is truth?” How would you answer this epistemological question? To a certain degree, everything in life depends on our … [Read more...]
Pew: A fourth of Christians eye astrology, tarot cards, fortune tellers – most for fun
NEW ORLEANS (BP) – Greg Mathias, who teaches global missions at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS), told Baptist Press that while in Jackson Square this past weekend, he likely walked past five fortune tellers and tarot card readers, common sights there. But according to Pew Research, many Christians in the U.S. are not just passing by such phenomena. More than a quarter of Christians engage with such psychic phenomena, most often astrology in the form of printed … [Read more...]
State of the Bible shows U.S. outlier in biblical reverence in ‘secular west’
PHILADELPHIA (BP) – From a global vantage point unique to its study of the Bible’s impact on U.S. adults, the American Bible Society (ABS) said Americans revere Scripture, faith and church more than others in a geographical cluster described as the “secular west.” Including the U.S., Canada, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand in the cluster, the ABS said only 37 percent of secular west residents say the Bible is personally relevant, save the U.S., an outlier with 51 percent of … [Read more...]
Glory in resurrection
This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. The glory we experience now as Christ lives in us, and the glory we experience in death as our souls and spirits ascend into heaven, are partial works of glorification. But full glorification for followers of Jesus takes place when he calls our bodies from the grave and gives us incorruptible bodies like the body he bore when … [Read more...]

Ancient mosaic’s connection to Council of Nicaea still relevant, NOBTS archeologist says
NASHVILLE (BP) – New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary Professor Jim Parker sees a recently-uncovered proclamation from early Christians as very much a current mandate for today’s believers. The Megiddo Mosaic refers to an ancient flooring discovered during excavations in 2005 near the Megiddo prison in northern Israel. Dating back to the third or fourth century, it included the phrase “God Jesus Christ,” thus predating Christianity’s official recognition as a religion. The … [Read more...]
Report shows medical missions trip yields surprising results
Short-term volunteer mission projects can make a long-term impact. The key, according to International Mission Board missionaries Cade and Ginny Wheeler, is for the local church to be fully invested and use volunteers within an already existing strategy. After Armenian Baptists hosted a Serve Tour of mostly 50 medical volunteers from the United States and Greece, they reported their work advanced at a faster rate less than a year after the joint mission trip through Send Relief and IMB … [Read more...]
