A believer’s life perspective changes when he prioritizes making disciples. He listens to know if the person he meets is lost or saved. If he’s lost, is he in transit or living nearby? If he’s saved, then is he making disciples? If he’s moving on and you probably won’t see him again, then share the full gospel message of salvation. It helps to be sensitive to who the person is, so engaging in attentive listening is required. You might ask about their religious background, culture, … [Read more...]
Bible stories ‘Light Up Missouri’ for non-readers
JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Baptists have accepted the challenge during the next two years to distribute one million Bibles across their state as part of “Light Up Missouri,” a servant evangelism initiative organized by the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC). Through this campaign, they hope to combat the tide of biblical illiteracy that has spread across the nation and to see lives transformed by the truth of Scripture. And by sharing stories from God’s Word, they hope to reach even the … [Read more...]
Call to prayer: Where are all the godly men?
KANSAS CITY – Where have all the godly men gone? These days I ponder that question with increased frequency and concern. If the lack of godly men were only a matter of personality or ministerial preference, then little would be lost. Such is not the case, though. The church is in great need of awakening and renewal and, in the spirit of English Puritan leader Richard Baxter, its greatest need might well be godly men. Not that long ago, “man of God” was a common and honored descriptor … [Read more...]
How NAMB is assisting Southern Baptists churches in evangelism
By H. Al Gilbert ALPHARETTA, Ga. - God works through His people, the Church. The Bible makes it very clear. The local church is central in God's plan to move the gospel throughout the world. That's why the evangelism teams at the North American Mission Board (NAMB) are geared to encourage and extend the ministries of the local church. We believe in the continuum of church-every evangelism effort should be rooted in and flow back into the local church. NAMB's role becomes clear in the … [Read more...]
What does the Bible really say about tithing?
JEFFERSON CITY – Does the Bible command tithing – that is, giving 10 percent of our income to God? If we don’t tithe, are we robbing God? Doesn’t the Old Testament teach tithing, while the New Testament teaches giving? Isn’t the whole issue one of law vs. grace? These questions – and others – are addressed in a new video and Bible study just released by the Missouri Baptist Convention. The video/study package is called, “Will a man rob God? What the Bible really says about … [Read more...]
3-time ‘Woman of the Year’ among those to speak at Worldview Conference
KAYLA RINKER/contributing writer HANNIBAL – With more than 500,000 members, 450 prayer/action chapters and teams, 600 trained leaders, and 30 years of service, Concerned Women for America (CWA) is the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization. “There is hardly a single issue facing the nation today that is not critically important to Baptist women; unless forces are put into place to halt the so-called ‘progressive’ agenda’s rampant spread throughout the nation, all of us … [Read more...]
HIS leaders pick church planter as coordinator
Lee Warren/contributing writer Kansas City – The Heartland Interstate Strategy (HIS) task force met at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary on Feb. 25 for its final meeting involving all of its original members. HIS decided to streamline its team (pairing down to one representative from each convention) after convention executives approved Jeffrey Chavez as its new coordinator. The meeting included HIS task force members Mark Elliott (Nebraska), Kurt Simon (Missouri), Gene Stockton … [Read more...]
April 8 Call to Prayer
Peyton Manning is perhaps the best quarterback at calling audibles. Football fans have watched this guy for years step up to the line of scrimmage, and if he discovers that the play called in the huddle is not going to translate into a successful yardage gain, he calls an audible. The play doesn’t need to be complicated, just something the opposing team doesn’t expect. I need to call an audible. One of the functions of the state convention is to convene the people of God called … [Read more...]
Become agents of spiritual transformation
Lawrence led a man on the street to Jesus as part of Crossover prior to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Indianapolis. The man immediately asked, “May I go tell my sister?” Lawrence agreed and soon watched as the man brought his sister out of an apartment building. After Lawrence led her to faith in Christ she admitted, “The second floor of that apartment is a brothel, but I’ll go tell them.” Lawrence pointed to the Baptist church, which was just across the street. The … [Read more...]
Fight for what is good and precious, like life
I always thought I would age gracefully. Nope. One glimpse at the first few wrinkles in the mirror and I knew I was going fighting, kicking and screaming all the way. It’s not exactly aging gracefully, is it, when you find yourself going through the mile-long counter of miracle wrinkle creams at the department store and you come home with one of each? Sadly, it’s not been the most successful battle. Several vats of creams later, there are places on this face that don’t care that it was … [Read more...]
Deaf church planter works so Detroit’s unchurched might hear
TOBIN PERRY /Baptist Press MACOMB, Mich. (BP) – Scott Blanchard is familiar with all the public perceptions of Detroit and its surrounding area: It’s dying. No one wants to live there. The church can’t thrive in the Motor City. But the fact is, the Detroit-area native and Southern Baptist church planter just doesn’t buy those perceptions. During the past three years as he has planted Lakepointe Church in Macomb, Mich., just outside Detroit, he has seen a different story take … [Read more...]
Church planters help two Quebec university students encounter gospel
ADAM MILLER/Baptist Press LENNOXVILLE, QC (BP) – Canadians easily dismiss Christianity – especially in Quebec. The history of mistrust is woven deep within the fabric of Québécois culture – a culture that’s decidedly Catholic and, at the same time, increasingly secular. But Lucas Aube in Lennoxville, Quebec, has worked to make rejecting Christ a greater challenge than ever among the thousands of students of Bishops University and Champlain College. The immediate response many give to … [Read more...]
