JEFFERSON CITY – Families seeking to build Christ-centered homes will find a helpful resource in an upcoming conference hosted by two Missouri Baptist churches. The 2nd Annual Unshakeable Truth Worldview Conference will take place on Oct 14-15 and is hosted by Heritage Baptist Church and Hillcrest Baptist Church in Lebanon. Have archeologists found Peter’s hometown?
EL-ARAJ, Israel (BP) – Archaeologists believe they may have solved a mystery: the location of Bethsaida, the biblical town that was home to the apostles Peter, Andrew and Philip. In addition to its identification as the hometown of three apostles (John 1:44), Bethsaida is mentioned in Scripture as the site Jesus healed a blind man (Mark 8:22) and fed the 5,000 (Luke 9:10). Southern Baptist archaeologists, who were not involved in the project, said pinpointing Bethsaida may shed light … [Read more...]
A religion of the Book: The King James Bible
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the 20th column in a year-long series leading up to the 500th anniversary of the 16th-century Reformation on Oct. 31, 2017. When Queen Elizabeth I died childless after 45 years in power, the dynasty of the Tudor family descended from Henry VIII also ended. Now, the English monarchy went to the Stuart family and, specifically, to the Scottish King James VI—now crowned also as King James I of England. During his reign in Scotland, King James became familiar with … [Read more...]
The hymnal
There has never been a stronger argument for the disuse of something in worship in a very long time as the hymnal in the 21st century church. We have projection, chord sheets, SongSelect™, ProPresenter™, and much, much more. Why even bother with a hymnal, especially a denominational hymnal? The denominational hymnal began with Hymns Ancient and Modern back in 1861 in England from a board of Anglicans known as “The Proprietors.” It was presented as such to codify the doctrine and teaching … [Read more...]
Stephen Hawking’s grand design
This is the first in a two-part series on Stephen Hawking’s contention that science has resolved the need for God. Every so often, a renowned scientist captivates a global audience through a combination of brilliance, charisma, and an uncanny ability to communicate complex ideas in simple terms. Carl Sagan comes immediately to mind. So does Neil deGrasse Tyson. And, of course, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, whose dazzling intellect and sense of humor, despite severe physical … [Read more...]
Juston Gates: The pastor as preacher, administrator
FORSYTH – When Juston Gates of First Baptist Church, Forsyth, first surrendered to the ministry, he imagined that most of his time would involve preaching, prayer and other “neat, spiritual stuff,” but 18 years in ministry have taught him otherwise. In fact, he came to find out that many of his days were filled with administrative tasks: making financial decisions, overseeing the work of committees, leading meetings and equipping the church’s ministry staff. “We (pastors) make so many … [Read more...]
Vic Borden: The pastor as counselor and guide
KANSAS CITY – Vic Borden, the pastor of Red Bridge Baptist Church here, focuses on his ministry strengths. For him, that means walking alongside his congregation as shepherd and counselor, weeping with those who weep and rejoicing with those who rejoice. “I’m just an OK administrator, theologian and preacher, but I am in my zone when I am tending the flock,” Borden said. I have that heart for God’s people, and I think they would tell you that. I feed them and I watch out for them and … [Read more...]
David Wells: The pastor as servant-leader
HILLSBORO – When it comes to serving, pastor David Wells prefers to lead Sandy Baptist Church by example. “Whether it is serving through missions, ministering or disaster relief, you can’t take the people where you haven’t been,” he said. “If I want them to serve, I need to be their servant first. Servanthood is about doing it with them, not for them.” Wells was in a perfect position to model servant leadership for Sandy Baptist. When they called him as pastor, they specifically asked … [Read more...]
Called to shepherd the flock of Christ
JEFFERSON CITY – The preaching of God’s Word is central to a lead pastor’s role in the local church, but the pastor—as an under-shepherd of Christ’s flock—is required to do much more than this during his weekly routine. “The pastor has to be a shepherd,” said Tony Preston, director of missions for the Clay-Platte Baptist Association and professor of pastoral leadership at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. “A shepherd does a number of things: he protects the flock. He provides for … [Read more...]
‘May we never forget’
I appreciated the article in the August 8th issue entitled, Missouri Baptists honored by seminary for leadership in Conservative Resurgence. The resurgence is a significant part of the history of a people called Southern Baptist. That Southwestern Seminary would honor John Yeats, Gerald Davidson, Jim Wells, Fred Powell, and James Hefley for their leadership in moving the SBC back to its historic commitment to the Scriptures as infallible, authoritative, and inerrant is commendable. Without … [Read more...]
The Cooperative Program and the ‘Missouri Plan’
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the third of several articles commemorating the Baptist history in Missouri, written by members of the Missouri Baptist Convention’s Historical Commission. Many Missouri Baptists do not realize how influential our state association was in establishing the current model for the Cooperative Program. In 1845, when the Southern Baptist Convention was formed by withdrawing fellowship from the Baptist Triennial Convention, many states like Missouri had to decide which … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptist apologists launch podcast to defend, discuss faith
JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Baptist Apologetics Network members Adam Cochrun and Dave Van Bebber have launched a bi-weekly podcast called “T.A.G. You’re It!” The podcast features interviews and debates about culture, current events, theology, and cults from a biblical perspective. “We wanted to do something that no other Missouri Baptist apologists were doing,” said Van Bebber. “We wanted to amplify the voice of Missouri Baptists engaged in defending the Christian faith.” Van Bebber and … [Read more...]
