NASHVILLE (BP) – Decorated surgeon and missionary Rebekah Naylor, who heard God's call to medical missions at age 13, never longed for marriage and motherhood. She simply left the details of her life up to the Lord, she told Baptist Press just shy of her 74th birthday. "I think it is vital that we not put qualifications on God's call," said Naylor, who celebrated her birthday on Jan. 2. "It cannot be that I agree to respond to God's call to missions provided He gives me a husband or sends … [Read more...]

IMB’s Platt: When we pray, God works
RICHMOND, Va. (BP) -- No matter what the story is, whether it's a family planting a church in a doctor's office in Japan or a young man sharing truth over coffee with university students in Mexico City, International Mission Board president David Platt says two things are true: God is at work through missionaries around the world and praying for them matters. "This isn't just a rushed or mechanical exercise. God has ordained our prayer as a means to accomplish His purpose in the world," … [Read more...]
Mission team makes disciples in Mexico
MEXICO CITY – From Todd Beel’s house in Mexico City, he can spot planes coming in every five minutes or so. “Each time, that’s another couple hundred people coming in from Europe, multiple cities across Europe, cities across South America, many cities in the United States and Canada,” he points out. Each time one lands, the city of more than 28 million opens its arms to a little more diversity, and each time, for Todd’s team of 12 IMB missionaries, the task gets a little bigger. But that’s … [Read more...]

Peyton shares Christ with forgotten refugees
NORTH AFRICA – Six years ago, one of Seth Peyton’s* good friends paid a high price to escape the violence and famine of his home country. Like hundreds of other North African refugees, he gave his savings to a smuggler who packed him into a standing-room-only truck for a long, miserable trip across the Sahara Desert followed by a dangerous boat ride across the Mediterranean Sea. Many don’t make it—their bodies wash up on the shore of Europe’s coast. But Seth’s friend said he wasn’t … [Read more...]

FBC De Soto takes Thanksgiving to Italy
ITALY – Twelve miles south of Verona, Italy, lies the township of Pizzoletta. The tourists who visit this beautiful part of Italy rarely make it to this small village and prefer to crowd into the narrow streets of Verona to see the Roman Arena that dates to 40 B.C. or “Juliet’s Balcony” that is just off the Piazza delle Erbe. But in early November, Pizzoletta boasted an unusual attraction for the Veneto region ... an American Thanksgiving dinner. On November 4th, a mission team from … [Read more...]
Over the top for the top of the world, elsewhere
The promotional materials for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for international missions are out in circulation. This time of year, our Missouri churches often use the materials for promoting a week of prayer for our 3,800 international SBC missionaries, or some churches host a missions event that promotes all levels of missions – international, domestic, state and associational missions. One of the stories in the packet especially caught my interest because of Missouri Baptists’ … [Read more...]
