Larry Lewis: leading SBC to support life
Dr. Larry Lewis was shocked when in 1979 he opened a St. Louis newspaper to see the full-page ad listing the religious denominations and groups who favored a “pro-choice” – a pro-abortion – position. He learned that the ad was also in other major newspapers throughout the country. In that listing “… right along with the Unitarians … ” was the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest protestant denomination! This shock set him in motion. He discovered and was further … [Read more...]
72-hour abortion wait becomes law despite veto
JEFFERSON CITY – It took until the final hours of the veto session late on Sept. 10, but the Missouri legislature has overridden Gov. Jay Nixon’s vetoes and made Missouri home of the longest waiting period before an abortion in the country: 72 hours. In what pro-life leaders are calling a major victory, women must now wait three days after an initial consultation with a doctor when seeking an abortion. Missouri’s previous waiting period was 24 hours. The vote tally was 117-44 in the … [Read more...]
DOM leans on God through depression, anxiety
MOBERLY – Churches in America have made great strides when it comes to minister to the broken and hurting, the confused, abused and angry. But there is still one taboo that Rick Hall, the director of missions for Crossroads Baptist Association says the church still does address, and it’s one he’s intimately aware of for all his adult life: mental health. “It’s almost like modern-day leprosy,” Hall said. “If you have cancer, or a tumor or a heart attack, people understand and help you. … [Read more...]
Concerns voiced over PBS’ airing of ‘After Tiller’
WASHINGTON (BP) – The premiere on America's public television stations of a documentary about late-term abortion doctors has prompted concerns and criticisms from pro-life advocates. On Sept. 1, the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) telecast "After Tiller," a 2013 movie about the only four doctors who openly perform third-trimester abortions in the United States. The nearly 90-minute film is available for viewing online at the PBS website through Oct. 1. Point of View (POV), the PBS … [Read more...]
Pro-life efforts target abortion tourism
(WNS) – Pro-life abortion restrictions taking hold across the country are having unintended consequences in a few states with less regulation: women traveling across state lines to kill their babies. Half of the abortions performed in Kansas, more than a third of those in North Dakota, and almost a quarter in Tennessee are considered “out of state,” according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Overall abortion rates in all three states decreased between 2008 and 2011 – 35 percent in … [Read more...]

The death of actor James Garner saddened fans across the country. Far more than a political issue
NASHVILLE – “This is as close as a Southern Baptist gets to dancing in the streets for joy.” That was how Russell Moore, the president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), described the news that Hobby Lobby had prevailed in its fight against a government mandate that the company pay for abortion-causing drugs. Moore spoke to the media during a press conference after the June 30 Supreme Court ruling. “A government that can pave over the … [Read more...]
What does Hobby Lobby’s win mean?
Evan Lenow & Trey Dimsdale/Land Center In the highly anticipated decision of Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, the Supreme Court issued a victory to closely held for-profit corporations on the issue of religious liberty. While the decision was not as sweeping as some may have wanted—or as Justice Ginsburg claimed in her dissent—the Court’s decision upheld the idea that Americans need not check their right to religious liberty at the door when they enter the business world. At issue for the … [Read more...]
Governor vetoes 72-hour waiting bill, override likely
JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed July 2 a bill that would extend the waiting period to get an abortion in Missouri from 24 to 72 hours. It now faces a likely veto override by the General Assembly in September. The bill passed the Missouri House 111-39 and the Senate 22-9. It takes two third to override a veto, a margin the bill would have if legislators’ votes remained the same. Pro-life legislators said the extended waiting period was appropriate given the magnitude of the … [Read more...]
