When Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief (DR) had a training simulation last May, I was blessed to have a chainsaw crew composed of volunteers mainly from Lebanon visit my home. They practiced by removing two dead trees. As they were getting ready to leave, they prayed for me and then presented me with a “gift” version of a New Testament with all their signatures. It really amazed me to think that each DR crew carried Bibles, that they cared enough to share with those that they had just … [Read more...]
Planned Parenthood to receive $655,000 as ObamaCare ‘navigators’
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Aug. 15, the Obama Administration announced the award of over $655,000 in taxpayer grants to three Planned Parenthood affiliates to act as “navigators,” helping enroll Americans in federally facilitated insurance exchanges under ObamaCare. Those grants are part of $67 million in federal funds that will go to over 100 organizations to help promote the health care law. The coercive, one-size-fits-all regime of ObamaCare is already set to increase costs and further burden … [Read more...]
O magnify and liquefy; drink living H2O
People say that to survive a volatile stock market you should have plenty of liquidity. That’s why I’m thinking about investing in water. When you’re investing in water stocks, I wonder if you get to decide whether to buy the hydrogen and oxygen together or separately. I don’t know, chemistry was never my thing. Knowing me, I’d mix up my formulas. A couple of extra dashes of oxygen and instead of H2O I could end up with something like H2O2. That might be a better investment stock-wise, but … [Read more...]
New Mexico Supreme Court: Progressives run off the cliff
Southern Baptists and other people of faith in New Mexico have been told by their state Supreme Court that the price of U.S. citizenship is to subordinate their faith to the homosexual agenda. This appears to be the first ruling of its kind by a Supreme Court. So it merits our attention. The case involved Elaine and Jon Huguenin, co-owners of Elane Photography of Albuquerque, who were asked by two lesbians in 2006 to photograph their “commitment ceremony” (homosexual “marriage” is not … [Read more...]
Yeats: Pray for flood victims, churches
The first week of August, the Roubidoux and Gasconade floodwaters ravaged many homes in this area. Many of the victims were not insured against floodwaters that rose to historic highs. Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief teams are there serving with several other first responder organizations. Some of the local church students and adults are helping their neighbors and friends in their time of need by clearing debris from houses and yards. That is so characteristic of Missouri … [Read more...]
Apologetics: Is God guilty of genocide?
In 1 Sam. 15:3 God commands King Saul: “Now go and attack the Amalekites and completely destroy everything they have. Do not spare them. Kill men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and donkeys.” Bible stories like this are fodder for atheists like Richard Dawkins, who writes in The God Delusion, “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, … [Read more...]
Should you believe in ghosts?
Ghosts are everywhere. They star in major motion pictures from “The Shining” to “Scary Movie 2.” Some ghosts are friendly (Casper) and some are frightening (Bloody Mary). Popular television shows like “Ghost Adventures” use the latest technologies to “prove” that spirits of the dead are all around us – and want to make their presence known. But is this true? The short answer is no. As Christians, we must gauge all truth claims by the Bible, the ultimate and unchanging measure of … [Read more...]
MMO seeds produce overflowing
Missouri Missions Offering Remember growing something from seeds as a science experiment in school? In most of those science experiments, as in most of our own planting of flowers or fruits, the seed pack has a picture of what is produced by the seeds we plant. The Bible promises us that the seeds we sow in faith for the kingdom of God will also produce a crop. We don’t always know what that kingdom crop will look like. The faithful men and women who are planting churches and doing … [Read more...]
Homosexual movement knows how to skin a cat
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia predicted that when the high court struck down state laws against homosexuality in the Lawrence v. Texas case in 2003 and more recently a portion of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), it would only be a matter of time before the court would force states to recognize homosexual marriages – and ultimately other types as well. Polygamists, for example, already are advancing a case in the federal courts, using the same arguments exploited by … [Read more...]
Don Hinkle: Painful truth about the American Cancer Society
I made a few donations to the American Cancer Society (ACS) after the disease caused my father’s death in 1989 at the age of 60. I will never give the ACS another penny. And I say this as a person who has lost a kidney to cancer and despite some good research to battle the disease by the ACS. Why do I decline to donate to the ACS? Because of its increasingly liberal politics and excursions into causes that violate my conscience by ultimately disobeying God’s Word. Am I calling for a … [Read more...]
John Yeats: Sometimes you just gotta strut your stuff
Every so often, I get wind of something very special. Something that cooperative Missouri Baptists do that just knocks your socks off (please excuse the colloquialism). The very day I wrote this column, I spent the morning with our state missionaries and the MBC support staff. I heard testimony after testimony of ministry with churches of every size and method. Some churches were engaging in VBS, Super Summer, youth camps, international mission trips, North American mission projects, new … [Read more...]
Leading children to Christ, tell them Bible stories early
Growing up, my best friend was Jimmy and we did everything together for several years. It was only natural one summer to invite him to Vacation Bible School at my church. His parents let him go and he soon wanted to give his heart to Christ, so my mother talked to his mother. That’s when I learned about the “age of accountability” and even though I had accepted Christ and been baptized at age seven, apparently Jimmy’s mother – following the tradition of their church – insisted that he be … [Read more...]
