WASHINGTON (BP) -- The Southern Baptist Convention's ethics entity has called on President Trump and Congress to act quickly in the new year to protect unborn children. The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission recommended six pro-life priorities to the new administration and legislators in a Dec. 20 post at the entity's website. The items offered by Russell Moore, the ERLC's president, and Travis Wussow, the recently named vice president for public policy, included: Making the Hyde … [Read more...]
With election over, prayer & grace urged
WASHINGTON (BP) -- Donald Trump pulled off a startling victory with the support of four in five white voters who identified themselves as evangelical Christians, and Southern Baptist leaders called for prayer for the president-elect and grace toward others. Trump -- the billionaire, celebrity businessman -- completed his unexpected rise through the Republican Party and the American electorate to defeat Democratic favorite Hillary Clinton Tuesday (Nov. 8), surprising pollsters and most … [Read more...]
New report endangers liberty
WASHINGTON (BP) – Religious liberty as Americans have known it throughout their history will suffer a critical setback if a new report by the country’s top civil rights panel is followed, say Southern Baptist and other advocates for the First Amendment freedom. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (USCCR) declared in its Sept. 7 report protections to ensure nondiscrimination “are of preeminent importance in American jurisprudence” and religious exemptions from safeguards for such … [Read more...]
Supreme court blocks transgender rulings
WASHINGTON (BP) – The U.S. Supreme Court has blocked for now lower-court decisions requiring a Virginia school district to enable a female student who identifies as male to use the boys’ restroom. The justices announced, Aug. 3, they had put on hold a June ruling by a federal court ordering the Gloucester County School Board to permit Gavin Grimm to use the male restroom while the case is settled in court. Grimm, 17, is a female biologically but considers herself a male. The Supreme … [Read more...]
Christian education leaders: No rush from public schools
WASHINGTON (BP) – The Obama administration’s transgender directive for public schools does not seem so far to have provoked a widespread rush of families toward other education options, but it could be a factor if such a movement develops in the future, say leaders in the Christian school and homeschooling movements. The May 13 guidance issued by the Departments of Education and Justice directed public schools and universities to permit transgender students to use the restrooms and locker … [Read more...]
Court strikes down abortion provider regulations
WASHINGTON (BP) – The U.S. Supreme Court struck down Monday (June 27) a state legislature's effort to hold abortion providers responsible for the protection of women who use their services. In a 5-3 opinion, the high court ruled portions of a Texas law that regulate abortion doctors and clinics constitute an "undue burden" on a woman's right to abort her child and are therefore unconstitutional. The high court's reversal of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans invalidated a … [Read more...]
SBC repudiates display of Confederate flag
ST. LOUIS (BP) – Messengers to the 2016 Southern Baptist Convention renounced display of the Confederate battle flag in a historic, overwhelming vote June 14. The resolution was one of seven adopted by messengers, … [Read more...]
ERLC’s Moore defends religious freedom for Muslims
ST. LOUIS (BP) – Russell Moore offered a ringing defense of religious freedom for all, including Muslims, during the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission's report Wednesday (June 15) to the 2016 Southern Baptist Convention. When questioned by a messenger how a Southern Baptist could defend the right of Muslims to build mosques, the ERLC's president said it was not a difficult decision. "What it means to be a Baptist is to support soul freedom for everybody," Moore … [Read more...]
N.C. governor defends restroom law in suit
WASHINGTON (BP) – North Carolina’s governor went to federal court, May 9, to defend his state’s new restroom privacy law against a threat from the Obama administration. Gov. Pat McCrory’s lawsuit asks a judge to declare the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act, also known as H.B. 2, does not violate federal anti-discrimination protections by requiring individuals in government buildings to use the restrooms of the sex on their birth certificates. The Department of Justice (DOJ) had … [Read more...]
Trump’s win draws support, concern from evangelicals
WASHINGTON (BP) – Donald Trump's striking victory in Indiana Tuesday (May 3) apparently settled the race for the Republican presidential nomination, but it did little to resolve the divisiveness among conservatives and evangelical Christians over his controversial candidacy. The brash billionaire triumphed easily in the latest primary over both of his rivals for the GOP nomination, leaving him seemingly with no opponents and an open path to the nomination barring a stunningly dramatic … [Read more...]
Labeling porn ‘public health hazard’ may bring change in treatment
WASHINGTON (BP) – Labeling pornography a “public health hazard” may prove to be a game-changer. That is the hope of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) and its allies in the attempt to prevent exposure and addiction to pornography and to help those impacted by its use. The effort to reverse the spread of sexually explicit material and its effects received a boost March 29, when Utah Gov. Gary Herbert signed a resolution saying pornography is establishing “a public health … [Read more...]
Senate defunds abortion giant
WASHINGTON (BP) – The U.S. Senate passed a budget-related bill, Dec. 3, that challenges President Obama to carry out his promised veto to protect, in part, the country’s No. 1 abortion provider. Senators voted 52-47 in a nearly party-line roll call for a reconciliation measure that cuts 80 to 90 percent of federal funds in the next year for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and its affiliates. The legislation also repeals fundamental sections of the controversial 2010 … [Read more...]
