BURFORDVILLE – Bryon Kindle claims he isn’t a good preacher. “I drive my wife insane every time I butcher the English language,” said Kindle, pastor at Burfordville Baptist Church here. “I am not an attractive person, and I can’t sing. But praise God it’s not about personalities. It’s about Jesus Christ. There is no reason we should see what has been going on down here. No reason other than it’s 100 percent about Christ.” Burfordville, a small town west of Cape Girardeau, is experiencing … [Read more...]
FBC Chadwick stocks up love for neighbors
CHADWICK – Their ministry approach may be inside the cabinet, but it’s definitely outside the box. Open since February, First Baptist Church’s (FBC) “Community Care Cabinet” allows the church to show the love of Christ to the people of Chadwick in a quiet, yet tangible way. “We wanted to reach out by doing something that would actually be helpful,” said Bryan Farris, deacon at FBC. Chadwick is a rural and low-income community where many people receive some kind of federal assistance. … [Read more...]
Cornerstone Baptist makes Jesus famous in Sedalia
SEDALIA – They just wanted to see God do something big. And according to Carol Payne, charter member of Cornerstone Baptist Church here, God did not disappoint. Fifteen years ago Darrell and Carol Payne, along with a core group of church visionaries, felt God leading them to church planting. In 2002 the west side of Sedalia was starting to thrive and there was no evangelical presence in the area. “We started in a barn and we’ve seen some amazing miracles along the way,” said Payne. … [Read more...]
Wife’s devotion leads husband to salvation
CLEVER – Leading up to the point of his salvation, Brian Jump was living a lie. “If you would have asked me if I was a Christian, I would have said yes,” said Brian, pastor at First Baptist Church Clever. “I was a kind of pseudo Christian. I just blended in and did what everyone else was doing. I convinced myself that my lack of passion was because I hadn’t been properly discipled. I felt convicted after every sermon but didn’t want to respond because I was so concerned about what other … [Read more...]
MBCH adoption comes full circle
RICHMOND— It’s strange for Cara Peoples to consider what her life would have been like if she hadn’t been adopted through the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home (MBCH) back in 1965. She said it would be totally different. “I wouldn’t have grown up in Richmond, Missouri; I would not have met my husband, Claude and had our two girls and grandsons; and I would not be able to give back to the MBCH as a board member,” said Peoples, member of First Baptist Church Richmond. Peoples was adopted … [Read more...]
SBU physical therapy team serves in Haiti
CARREFOUR, Haiti – In an underserved nation like Haiti, if a person experiences any physical impairment, whether mild or life-altering, that person will likely live as though the residual pain and distress is his or her new lot in life. “Conveying the knowledge that there is hope, relief and rehab exercises to encourage healing is huge,” said Dr. Beverly McNeal, professor of physical therapy at Southwest Baptist University and coordinator for SBU’s Physical Therapy Global Health Outreach … [Read more...]
Refugee simulation brings ‘lasting lesson’ to Kansas City
LIBERTY – After escaping a violent mob, crossing the Ugandan border, and spending time in a refugee camp, the 55 participants of the Blue River-Kansas City Baptist Association’s (BR-KC) first Refugee Simulation experience were awarded the chance to be resettled in another country. “Two hours of life in the refugee camp was enough to give them a taste of the conditions, and the thought of ten years there was too much for participants to handle,” said Andrew Huesing, leader of BR-KC’s People … [Read more...]
Loving life: Woman chooses life for baby, blesses family
DESLOGE— Sitting at the local clinic awkwardly in a paper gown, Dawn couldn’t stop shivering. She couldn’t … no, she wouldn’t have his baby. How could she keep something that would only be a reminder of the pain and shame of rape? That man was a monster. She had only gone on a few dates with him when he decided to force himself on her. And now she was pregnant. She was working two jobs and could barely take care of the two-year-old son she already had. She would just get a quick abortion … [Read more...]
‘Penny war’ benefits MBCH
PRESTON – It may have been a battle of the sexes, but it’s Missouri Baptist Children’s Home (MBCH) teens that came out the victor. In two months Olive Point Baptist Church’s SLAM (Students Living A Mission) ministry raised $400 and collected 11 duffle bags in a Penny War that pitted girls versus boys. The youth group pilfered couch cushions, raided vehicle consoles and sacrificed sodas to collect enough change to send four MBCH teenagers to youth camp next summer. “The kids took the idea … [Read more...]
Special offering taken to multiply 42 churches
SPRINGFIELD – If Bob Roberts hears of a church member going out of town, he always inquires where they are going. “We have church plant partners in San Diego, Washington DC, and even Oahu, Hawaii so I like to tell them where they can visit one of our partners for Sunday worship and encourage them,” said Roberts, minister of missions at Second Baptist Church here. Through Second’s “Foundations for the Future” offering, the church has helped support 42 new church plants since 2010. In the … [Read more...]
Labradoodle joins DR in childcare ministry
ST. CHARLES – One look at the lovable face of Steele the labradoodle and Missouri Baptist children were put right at ease. “We like to hang around at check-in because many of the kiddos are anxious and Steele will get them excited, or at least a little distracted, to go into the childcare room,” said Ann Stevenson, Disaster Relief (DR) volunteer, member of First Baptist Church, Richland, and Steele’s handler. Steele is a professional therapy dog and has been part of the Missouri Baptist … [Read more...]
‘Satisfied’ theme of women’s luncheon
ST. CHARLES — From the chicken pesto, chocolate cake and take-home goody bag to the theme scripture passage found in Psalm 63:1-5, Missouri Baptist women left the 2016 Ministry Wives Luncheon completely satisfied. “As ministry wives we are often judged, or at least we feel judged, and we just can’t live up to it all,” said Juli Perstrope, president of this year’s group of luncheon officers and wife of Dr. Buddy Perstrope, pastor at First Baptist Church, St. Charles. “That’s why we … [Read more...]
