As someone who has worked in the newsrooms of three significant daily newspapers, I can testify to the lostness that exists. The lostness often surfaces as hostility and ridicule – especially toward Christianity. In recent days Christians have witnessed a pair of incidents that were contemptuous, even cruel. The first involved former football star and television sports analyst Tim Tebow, the son of Southern Baptist missionaries who attends First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Fla. Tebow is … [Read more...]
Political neutrality, sex and quizzy pollsters
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Public Religion Research Institute’s American Values Atlas estimates that about 64 percent of the total delegates in states with presidential primaries on or before March 8 will come from states with electorates that may be at least 50 percent evangelical. In Missouri it is believed to be around 60 percent evangelical in advance of the March 15 primary, with Southern Baptists representing the bulk of that vote. Yet we still have untold thousands who … [Read more...]
Is death coming for The Pathway?
Will Missouri Southern Baptists always have The Pathway, and if so, what will it look like? I have no idea. But God does. From the day it was born on June 8, 2002, The Pathway has always belonged to God through the churches of the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC). People have tried to discredit it and even silence it. Not surprisingly, it is despised by liberals. As someone who has been in journalism for four decades, I can tell you such attempts are not unusual and are even expected … [Read more...]
Proposing a religious liberty bill for Missouri
As attacks on our religious liberty have intensified in recent months, Missouri Baptist Convention Executive Director John Yeats asked me to spearhead a statewide multi-faith initiative that would further secure religious liberty for Missourians. For the past three months I have had the privilege of being a part of a broad coalition of church leaders, legal scholars, State Capitol staffers, lawmakers, pro-family and religious liberty groups in crafting legislation that would respect and … [Read more...]
Religious liberty challenge facing Missouri Baptists, faith groups
JEFFERSON CITY – It is coming to Missouri and if its citizens do not act soon, religious liberty for everyone will likely face an unprecedented threat. Last month the Oregon Department of Labor ordered Melissa and Aaron Klein, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa bakery, to pay a $135,000 fine because they refused to bake a “wedding” cake for two lesbians. It is not because they hate homosexuals. In fact they have repeatedly stated and demonstrated their love for homosexuals. The state is … [Read more...]
I didn’t need a shark to save my life
Eugene Finney of Fitchburg, Mass., and I have something in common. Before I share what it is, let me provide some background. In case you missed it recently in the news, while visiting his parents, Finney was swimming in the Pacific Ocean off Huntington Beach in Orange County, Calif., with his 10-year-old daughter Temple. The two of them dove into a, 7-9-foot wave and as they plummeted 20 feet underwater, Finney felt a strong force plow into his back, according to the San Jose Mercury … [Read more...]

Missouri battle brews over religious freedom
Whether or not we think Kim Davis is the perfect citizen to serve as the poster child for the defense of religious liberty in America, in my view, became irrelevant when an unelected federal judge threw her in jail like a common criminal. Adding to the shock was an ABC News/Washington Post poll that claimed 63 percent of Americans thought she should issue the marriage license to same-sex couples – if it violated her conscience and commitment to obey God. If Americans really feel that way, … [Read more...]
U of Missouri focus of abortion probe
University of Missouri Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin – like everyone – would do well to obey James 5:12, particularly the part, “but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.” In other words, just tell the truth. It is disturbing to see a leader do otherwise, especially when it pertains to the babies’ lives and Missouri taxpayers. During Loftin’s recent appearance before the Missouri Senate Interim Committee on the Sanctity of Life, which is … [Read more...]
A message to government concerning baby body parts
“Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward.” – Psalm 127:3 We have all been shocked and angered over Planned Parenthood selling body parts of aborted babies, thanks to the videos by the Center for Medical Progress. We ought to be outraged that our tax dollars – more than $500 million worth – are funding Planned Parenthood’s barbaric activity. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees that every American can assemble peacefully to protest … [Read more...]
A prophetic letter to Sen. McCaskill
One of the ways we can exercise our faithfulness to God is by engaging those who are in positions of public service. One way to do so is by writing them by letter or email. When we do that, we must always be respectful, showing honor to those whom deserve honor while also expressing our view – and most importantly God’s view. Frank DeVenuto is a friend who exchanges posts with me on my Facebook page. If you visit, you will find articles on issues, my comments, cartoons as well as friendly … [Read more...]
Planned Parenthood’s lengthy ‘rap sheet’
There have been 27 botched abortions at Planned Parenthood’s St. Louis clinic in the past five years. It is considered among the most dangerous abortion facilities in our land. The clinic may have been involved in Planned Parenthood’s latest scandal: selling body parts of aborted babies. None of this should surprise us. Planned Parenthood, the nation’s leading provider of abortions, has a “rap sheet” longer than your arm – all the while benefiting from millions of our tax dollars. Consider … [Read more...]
