BRANSON – As much as I love “Les Miserables” and “Phantom of the Opera,” those stage musicals do not have llamas or camels. Advantage: Sight & Sound Theatre’s ‘Samson.’ If you’ve been to a Sight & Sound production, you can go ahead and stop reading now. You already know the quality, thought and skill they put into the productions, so just save yourself a few minutes; go ahead and book your tickets for “Samson” and start planning that road trip down Highway 65. I had never been to … [Read more...]
Former Pathway writer pens Trump’s ‘spiritual biography’
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A former Missouri Baptist pastor who began his writing career reviewing books for The Pathway is now reaching a slightly larger audience. Scott Lamb, who once pastored Providence Baptist Church, has written several biographies and is now a vice president of Liberty University. His latest book, The Faith of Donald J. Trump: A Spiritual Biography, was co-authored with journalist David Brody and was released in February. The Pathway got a chance to ask Lamb a few questions … [Read more...]
‘The Branches’ adult home MBCH’s newest effort
SPRINGFIELD – For Greta Bradley, there is no difference between a Christian’s job and a Christian’s ministry. They are one and the same. So it’s no stretch that she would see her role as the “Qualified Developmental Disability Professional” for The Branches at Brookline, a Missouri Baptist Children’s Home (MBCH) residence for developmentally disabled adults, as a way to show God’s love. “Some ministers are called to the pulpit, and others are called to The Branches,” Bradley said. The … [Read more...]
Hannibal-area church treasurer arrested after funds go missing
NEW LONDON – A longtime deacon and treasurer of Antioch Baptist Church here has been charged with two federal counts of wire fraud in connection with the theft of more than $300,000 from the church. Ralls County Sheriff Gerry Dinwiddie announced Friday that the 68-year-old treasurer was arrested and taken into custody by FBI agents March 9. He said the arrest came as a result from an investigation into a “suspicious” fire that destroyed Antioch’s church building in December, 2016. A … [Read more...]
St. Louis churches being ‘Good Neighbors’ to refugees
ST. LOUIS - Since 2016, the Good Neighbor Initiative has worked to bring Mark 12:31 to life as cities like St. Louis become home to refugees from around the world. That verse reads: “’You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” At least 41 refugees arrived in St. Louis last year, from countries like Afghanistan, the Congo, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan and Syria. The Good Neighbor Initiative, a partnership between St. Louis Metro Baptist … [Read more...]
New US citizen says immigrants hungry for gospel
COLUMBIA – Regardless of the politics or legal arguments surrounding immigration, one thing is clear: they need Jesus. One of the United States’ newest citizens knows that first hand. Omar Segovia, the Missouri Baptist Convention’s ethnic church planting catalyst, was born in Chile, but immigrated with his family to Canada when he was six. He grew up there as a Canadian, but more importantly, he grew up around people who cared about his family and shared the gospel with them. They … [Read more...]
Murder in Missouri: 1932 church shooting shows violence not unique to 21st century
PERKINS – “Man shoots wife to death in church” seems like it could be the latest horrific headline in our modern news cycle, but sin is not a new phenomenon. Juanita Irwin can testify to this. Now 89 years old, as a little girl she witnessed the events that prompted that headline, which topped the April 5 edition of the Sikeston Standard in 1932. “My cousin and I are the only living people who were there when this happened,” she said. “We were only three years old, but we were there with … [Read more...]
MBCH president meets with Missouri’s First Lady
BRIDGETON – Exciting times are on the horizon for Missouri Baptist Children’s Home, trustees learned at their Jan. 23 meeting at the main MBCH campus. Budgets, regulatory hurdles, and the challenge of ministering to children and families in need will always be present, but MBCH President Russell Martin said there is reason to be optimistic in the coming days. For one, Martin and a Missouri Baptist foster family – Matt and Julie Kearns of Jefferson City (Matt is the Making Disciples … [Read more...]
Sight & Sound Theatre’s ‘Samson’ to bring down house in Branson
BRANSON – The best superheroes have some sort of flaw. It’s why Batman with his antisocial tendencies and emotional baggage makes for a more interesting story than squeaky clean Superman. That’s one reason why Matt Neff, the CEO of Sight & Sound Theatres, is so excited about the newest show coming to Branson, a story about a flawed biblical figure who could take on the Hulk in an arm wrestling match: Samson. “This is one of the most creatively challenging and fun stories we’ve gotten … [Read more...]
Franklin Association brings healing to Ghana
YENDI, Ghana – The mission team from Franklin Baptist Association doesn’t do anything halfway. They didn’t bring a handful of people on their recent trip to Ghana; they took 53. They didn’t set up a clinic to deal with minor illness and maladies; they set up a permanent intensive care unit at a local hospital. Joe Nogalski, pastor of Memorial Baptist Church in New Haven, has been going on the trips regularly since he was a student at Southern Seminary in 2001. It began with a partnership … [Read more...]
Gaming & God: Video games ripe for theological thinking
KANSAS CITY – Matt Millsap freely admits he made up the word, “theoludology” when he chose it as the topic of his doctoral dissertation in systematic theology. Google search the term, “theoludological,” and literally every single result includes his name. Broken up into its roots, his topic becomes clearer, even if doesn’t become easier to pronounce. “Theo-” and “-ology” are no-brainers. “Ludo” is the Latin root for “game” or “play.” Mashed together, Millsap created a new discipline: … [Read more...]
‘Church Security Handbook’ an easy first step
KANSAS CITY – Few topics are as hot and fresh on the minds of church goers as church security. What was already an oft debated topic was thrust into the national spotlight in November when a killer charged into the morning worship services at First Baptist Church, Sutherland Springs, Texas and murdered 26 while injuring 20 others. Responses from churches large and small are varied. Some seek to formalize, review and refine their security and contingency plans. Others rely solely on local … [Read more...]
