ST. LOUIS – Two Missourians will be on the ballot and a Missourian is nominating a third candidate when messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) Annual Meeting vote for 2nd vice president of the nation’s largest protestant denomination June 14.
Malachi O’Brien, a pastor from the Kansas City area, Jeff Brown, dean of students of Hannibal-LaGrange University, and Indiana pastor Jose Burgos will all be nominated.
O’Brien splits his time between two churches. He has been pastor of The Church at Pleasant Ridge in Harrisonville since 2011 and the associate pastor of prayer and church revitalization at First Baptist Church in Raytown since 2014. He will be nominated by Brad Graves, pastor of First Baptist Church in Ada, Okla.
Brown, who joined the HLGU faculty in 2008, serves as dean of students as well as professor of Christian studies and missions coordinator. He also serves as the pastor of First Baptist, Ewing. He will be nominated by Luke Bray, pastor of Jeffersontown Baptist Church in Jeffersontown, Ky.
Jose Burgos, pastor of New Creation Ministry Church in Highland, Ind., is a church planter with a military and law enforcement background. He will be nominated by Scott Gordon, pastor of Claycomo Baptist Church.
Officer elections have been scheduled for the afternoon of June 14 during the SBC Annual Meeting.
There are three candidates for president: Tennessee pastor, Steve Gaines, North Carolina pastor, J.D. Greear, and Louisiana pastor David Crosby. California pastor Rob Zinn will be nominated for 1st vice president. As of press time, no other nominations had been announced.
