Missouri Baptists encouraged to plan for apologetics training

April 3, 2013 By The Pathway

JEFFERSON CITY – Help equip your church members to defend the Christian faith by scheduling an apologetics training event in 2013.

Apologetics is defined simply as a reasonable defense of the Christian faith, and it is the duty of every believer, according to Rob Phillips, who heads up a new apologetics ministry for Missouri Baptists.

“The need to defend our beliefs with gentleness and respect is growing as we live in a culture increasingly more hostile – or simply complacent – towards Christianity,” said Phillips.

“The apostle Peter encourages us to always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks us for a reason for the hope that is in us. Apologetics training is designed to help Christians at all levels of maturity understand what we believe, why we believe it, and how to share our faith with a lost – and increasingly skeptical – world.”

Training is tailored to a church’s needs and schedule. For example, Cross Keys Baptist Church in Florissant recently hosted two Sunday evening sessions in which participants explored topics ranging from “What is Christian Apologetics” to “Three Markers of False Teachers.”

Other Missouri Baptist churches have scheduled two-day weekend workshops to take advantage of the apologetics training.

For more information about topics, or to schedule Phillips to speak or lead a training event in your church, visit the Apologetics page on the MBC website (www.mobaptist.org/apologetics) or contact Phillips at 573.636.0400 ext. 304.

Preaching ministry ‘an honor and privilege,’ Whitney says

Aiden Trimble

Brother Frank Whitney stood up, took a deep breath, and walked toward the pulpit. Bible in hand, he double-checked his notes for the Sunday evening sermon. Tonight’s topic: faith the size of a mustard seed. The crowd wasn’t any larger than usual; about 30 people. It was just another Sunday evening service, except for one detail: The preacher, Brother Whitney, was 12 years old.
