McCoy names committees, appoints parliamentarians

JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) President Bruce McCoy has announced appointments for 16 people to the MBC Nominating Committee and Committee on Convention Committees. He also announced parliamentarians for the MBC’s annual meeting in Springfield, Oct. 25-27, and named three new members to the Committee on Executive Board Committees.

The Nominating Committee is tasked with recommending people to serve on the convention’s Executive Board, and the board of trustees for the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home, Missouri Baptist University, Missouri Baptist Foundation, The Baptist Home, Windermere Baptist Conference Center, Hannibal-LaGrange College and Southwest Baptist University. The Nominating Committee also recommends those to serve on the Christian Life Commission and the Missouri Baptist Historical Commission.

Those named to the Nominating Committee to serve terms expiring in 2013 include: Ed Carter, pastor, First Baptist Church, Oran; Muriel Elder, McCarthy Baptist Church, St. Joseph; Jamie Hitt, First Baptist Church, Winfield; Jeremy Muniz, pastor, First Baptist Church, DeSoto; Ken Parker, pastor, First Baptist Church, Kearney; Jo Ann Rainey, Immanuel Baptist Church, Hannibal; Leslie Umstattd, Northland Baptist Church, Kansas City; and Linda Welch, First Baptist Church, Golden. Muniz will serve as chairman.

The Committee on Convention Committees is a one-year appointment and its members are charged with recommending people to serve on the Credentials Committee, Committee on Order of Business, Committee on Continuing Review, Committee on Resolutions, Committee on Convention Preacher, Committee on Enrollment and Committee on Local Arrangements. The Credentials Committee ensures that churches and messengers are in good standing with the convention; the Committee on Order of Business plans and runs the annual meeting program; and the Committee on Continuing Review is tasked with studying any proposed changes to the convention’s constitution and by-laws. The Committee on Resolutions reports out approved resolutions for messengers to consider; the Committee on Convention Preacher recommends the preacher of the annual sermon at the next annual meeting and an alternate; the Committee on Enrollment arranges for the enrolling of messengers before and during the annual meeting; and the Committee on Local Arrangements assists the MBC staff in making all necessary local arrangements for conducting future annual meetings.

Those appointed to the 2010 Committee on Convention Committees include Jared Hamilton, pastor, First Baptist Church, St. Joseph; Wayne Daffron, First Baptist Church, Paris; Sarah Shay, Northland Baptist Church, Kansas City; Marvin Rohrbach, Richland Baptist Church, Kingdom City; Ed Plants, pastor, Geyer Road Baptist Church, Kirkwood; Jim Albers, First Baptist Church, Lockwood; and Howell Burkhead, pastor, First Baptist Church, Houston. Burkhead will serve as chairman.

McCoy named three new members of the MBC Executive Board to serve on the six-person Committee on Executive Board Committees. The committee is tasked with assigning MBC Executive Board members to the board’s various committees. New members with terms expiring in 2011 include: Stephen Ward, CrossPoint Fellowship, Republic; Gordon Voss, Olney Baptist Church; and Ty Harmon, pastor, Galloway Baptist Church, Springfield. Other members with terms expiring 2010 include Larry Atkins, pastor, First Baptist Church, Buckhorn; Dean Bredbenner, First Baptist Church, O’Fallon; and Alice Chastain, First Baptist Church, Polo.

McCoy named Judge Duane Benton, Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Kansas City and attorney David Feltz, Canaan Baptist Church, St. Louis, as parliamentarians for the annual meeting.

In a sweeping First Amendment decision issued March 31, the United States Supreme Court removed a virtual gag on free speech which the state of Colorado had imposed on Christian counselors when talking to minors about their sexuality. The Chiles decision has immediate implications beyond Colorado—including within the state of Missouri.

Smiles turned to laughter as Doug Mickan, associate pastor of worship and music at Faith Baptist Church in Festus, introduced his friends.  Mickan was at Parkway Baptist Church in St. Louis for an Operation Christmas Child event. His friends live in a trunk and depend on him for a voice.
