MBC salutes HLG on historic day

By Staff

HANNIBAL – In honor of Hannibal-LaGrange College’s sesquicentennial, David Tolliver, interim executive-director of the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC), recently presented the school with the following resolution. Tolliver will ask the MBC to approve a similar resolution during the MBC Annual Meeting Oct. 27-29 in St. Louis. It reads:

WHEREAS for 150 years, it has been the privilege of Missouri Baptists to be partnered with HLG in the extension of the Gospel, the edification of the saints, and the education of young Christians;

WHEREAS for 150 years, HLG has been educating and discipling students, offering knowledge for service, preparing students for spiritual and career success;

WHEREAS for 150 years, HLG has remained unapologetically Christian and unashamedly affiliated with the Missouri-Southern Baptist Convention;

WHEREAS the decidedly strong and deeply spiritual leadership of several college presidents, including the Christ-like leadership of current President, Dr. Woodrow W. Burt, has led HLG to be the premier academic institution that it is today;

WHEREAS HLG has been recognized by the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for their passion for missions and the participation of Hannibal-LaGrange students, faculty and administration in short-term missions trips;

WHEREAS for 150 years, HLG has personified its current statements of Vision, Mission and Purpose and is, in fact, “… a coeducational, biblically-based Christian institution in a covenant relationship with the MBC” and does, indeed, “… seek at every point to give Christ the preeminence;

AND, WHEREAS the year 2008 marks the 150th anniversary of the Gospel partnership that exists between the people and the churches of the MBC.

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Executive Board, the staff, the people and the churches of the MBC offer hearty congratulations to the administration, staff and faculty, students and alumni of HLG on the occasion of their 150th anniversary;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Executive Board, staff, people and churches of the MBC offer to HLG our continued prayers and generous support – moral, spiritual and financial support for all the years ahead;

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Executive Board, staff, people and churches of the MBC pledge to HLG continued partnership in the extension of the Gospel, the edification of the saints, and the education of young Christians.

Cultivating wisdom in a post-Christian culture

Harrison Lang

As American Christians in the 21st century, we have already fought many battles over political and cultural issues in the first quarter of this century. These battles have borne real fruit for the cause of Christ and the common good—whether the overturning of Roe v. Wade or the ongoing protection of religious liberty. Contrary to the doom some people have predicted, our nation has seen significant progress. That said, Christians must still engage the public square with confidence and discernment in Christ.
