CP giving nudges upward in 2007

By Staff

JEFFERSON CITY—The Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) final tabulation of giving through the Cooperative Program for 2007 came in at $16,013,552, åwhich is considerably below the budget figure of $16.5 million.

Continued careful spending and money saved by means of unfilled staff positions helped avert a financial crunch.

The total for 2007 wound up being about $46,500 more than the previous year, when the budget was the same.

Giving to the Rheubin L. South Missouri Missions Offering (MMO) finished at $720,061, which was under the 2006 total of $733,800.

The news was better concerning the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for international Southern Baptist missionaries. This year’s total was $3,875,187, up considerably from the 2006 total of $3,245,000. The goal for 2007 was $4 million.

“I’m proud of the staff that has been very careful with their spending,” said MBC Interim Executive Director David Tolliver. “We’ve come together in spirit, and we’re being careful with the Cooperative Program dollars.”

Attention in Missouri now shifts to the 2008 Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American missions.

Cultivating wisdom in a post-Christian culture

Harrison Lang

As American Christians in the 21st century, we have already fought many battles over political and cultural issues in the first quarter of this century. These battles have borne real fruit for the cause of Christ and the common good—whether the overturning of Roe v. Wade or the ongoing protection of religious liberty. Contrary to the doom some people have predicted, our nation has seen significant progress. That said, Christians must still engage the public square with confidence and discernment in Christ.
