Reeves co-authors textbook on Paul

BOLIVAR—Rodney Reeves, professor of biblical studies and dean of the Courts Redford College of Theology and Ministry at Southwest Baptist University, has co-authored a new textbook on the Apostle Paul. Published by InterVarsity Press, it is titled, Rediscovering Paul: An Introduction to His World, Letters and Theology.

His co-authors are David Capes, professor and chair of the department of Christianity and Philosophy at Houston Baptist University, and E. Randolph Richards, dean of the school of ministry and professor of biblical studies at Palm Beach Atlantic University, West Palm Beach, Fla.

Reeves has served as a pastor with churches in Missouri, Arkansas and Texas. He currently serves at First Baptist Church, Cassville.


 Blunt names Hicks to child abuse board

 JEFFERSON CITY—Richard Hicks, laity, Hallsville Baptist Church, has been appointed by Gov. Matt Blunt to the Child Abuse and Neglect Review Board. Hicks is an assistant prosecuting attorney at the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office.

His appointment is subject to Senate confirmation for a term ending April 7.


Christmas festival brightens Bolivar

 BOLIVAR—The 27th annual Festival of Christmas was presented Dec. 2 in the Mabee Chapel at Southwest Baptist Univertsity. The event is sponsored by the university and the Bolivar Ministerial Alliance.


Breland leaves HLG for William Carey

HANNIBAL – Garry Breland, who has spent sixteen years serving as a faculty member and the last eight years as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Hannibal-LaGrange College (HLG), announced in August that he had accepted a new position in a familiar place. Breland began his new duties as Vice President for Academic Affairs at William Carey University in October. Breland will serve in a similar capacity as his position at HLG.

Thomas ordained to Gospel ministry

FARMINGTON – Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church recently ordained pastor Steven A. Thomas to the gospel ministry. Thomas has been serving at Chestnut Ridge since July, 2006.


Bethany Baptist to conduct Prayer Walk

CAPE GIRARDEAU – Prior to the Dec. 23 Christmas Service at Bethany Baptist, the Baptist Men will be leading a prayer walk of the church, both building and grounds. This time of prayer for, and over, the church will begin promptly at 8 a.m. on Dec. 22.

The entire church congregation will participant in this time of commitment, praise, worship, and prayer.


‘Trunk or Treat’ a success in Cape

 CAPE GIRARDEAU – Bethany Baptist Church’s annual Trunk or Treat – a Halloween alternative centered around open car trunk full of candy – saw 200 people come through Oct. 31. Activities for the children included refreshments, treats, a maze, face painting and steer roping.


Hagans celebrate 65 years of marriage

SPRINGFIELD – James R. and Sarah Hagan are celebrating 65 years of marriage. They were married on Dec. 10, 1942. The Hagans served in Missouri from 1958 until 1969 at Neosho, Northside and then from 1974 until 1992 at First Baptist, Versailles, and Glenstone Baptist in Springfield.

EXPLAINER: Protecting children through the 2026 Chloe Cole Act

The Chloe Cole Act of 2026, named for the advocate Chloe Cole who has publicly shared about the horrors of being pushed into “transitioning” in her early teens, prohibits gender transition procedures for minors through regulating interstate commerce. Cole will visit the Missouri Baptist Convention’s Hannibal-LaGrange University, March 25, as the featured speaker for the school’s latest Free Society events.

Tichenor brings academic, philosophical perspectives to MBC apologetics network

Vincent Tichenor, the newest member of the Missouri Baptist Apologetics Network (MBAN), is a medical doctor with a family practice in Walnut Shade. He also works urgent care in addition to running his own practice. He brings the perspective of medical science to the defense of the Christian faith, alongside the varied expertise of his 23 fellow apologists.
