Committee on Convention Committees named

JEFFERSON CITY – Ministers and laity have been appointed to serve on the 2007 Missouri Baptist Convention Committee on Convention Committees by MBC President Mike Green. One member is from each of Missouri’s eight regions.

Denny Marr, minister of education and administration, Calvary Church, Republic (Southwest Region), was named chairman of the committee. Other ministers serving on the committee are: David Mason, pastor, Green Valley Baptist Church, St. Joseph (Northwest Region); Richard Rhea, pastor, First Baptist Church, Troy (East Central Region); Brian Baker, minister of education and missions, First Baptist Church, Belton (West Central Region); and Larry Greenfield, director of missions, Mineral Area (Southeast Region).

Laity serving on the committee are Stacey Seaton, First Baptist Church, Kahoka (Northeast Region); Roy Dameron, Concord Baptist Church, Jefferson City (Central Region); and Judy Jetton, Ozark Baptist Church, Houston (South Central Region).

The Committee on Convention Committees is responsible for nominating members to the following MBC standing committees: Committee on Convention Preacher – to serve and report in 2007; two members each for the Committee on Order of Business, Credentials and the Committee on Continuing Review, terms expiring 2010 – to begin serving following the 2007 convention; Committee on Resolutions and Committee on Enrollment – to serve in 2008; and Committee on Local Arrangements – to serve in 2009 in Raytown.

In a sweeping First Amendment decision issued March 31, the United States Supreme Court removed a virtual gag on free speech which the state of Colorado had imposed on Christian counselors when talking to minors about their sexuality. The Chiles decision has immediate implications beyond Colorado—including within the state of Missouri.

Smiles turned to laughter as Doug Mickan, associate pastor of worship and music at Faith Baptist Church in Festus, introduced his friends.  Mickan was at Parkway Baptist Church in St. Louis for an Operation Christmas Child event. His friends live in a trunk and depend on him for a voice.
