Bethel BC Independence to celebrate 50th in June
Bethel Baptist Church of Independence will be celebrating its 50th anniversary June 8-10. The church was constituted in 1957 under the leadership of Leonard Dyer as a mission church from Waldo Ave. Baptist. Over the years, the church has continued a long tradition of ministering in eastern Jackson County.
The festivities will begin the evening of June 8, with an old-fashioned revival service. Lindy Reed will be the featured evangelist. Then, on the evening of June 9, several Southern Gospel groups, including the nationally known, Florida Boys, will be ministering in song. The concert is free, and a love offering will be taken. The celebration will conclude Sunday morning, as the church celebrates its history with a special service followed by dinner on the grounds.
All former members and the community are invited to attend. Jim McMechan is the senior pastor at Bethel.
In the May 15 article on Keith Ward, a missionary who drowned in El Salvador, it was reported that a joint funeral service was held on the beach. It was actually held in a church in San Salvador. Also, Paul Posey, pastor of First Baptist Church, Tipton, administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, with Rod Land, a member of Concord Baptist Church, doing chest compressions.
