McCune remembers love Elliotts had for each other

March 30, 2004

Jean Elliott

 Larry Elliott

JEFFERSON CITY – Ken McCune, Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) Anglo church planting specialist, served as a missionary in Honduras from 1989-1996 with his wife, Shyre, and missionaries Larry and Jean Elliott. The Elliotts were killed serving the Lord in Iraq March 15.

“Perhaps the thing we most remember about Larry and Jean was the love they demonstrated for one another," McCune said. “We especially recall at mission meetings and Thanksgiving retreats them holding hands, putting an arm around each other, or just giving each other a special look that only comes from a commitment of love to one another."

Larry’s work in Honduras with the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention was similar to the work he was doing in Iraq . He was involved with teams digging wells near prospective church start areas and also around missionary housing. When they were killed in Iraq, Larry and Jean were researching needs for a water purification project.

“We will remember them for who they were, what they did and how they served the Lord to the end," McCune said.

Cultivating wisdom in a post-Christian culture

Harrison Lang

As American Christians in the 21st century, we have already fought many battles over political and cultural issues in the first quarter of this century. These battles have borne real fruit for the cause of Christ and the common good—whether the overturning of Roe v. Wade or the ongoing protection of religious liberty. Contrary to the doom some people have predicted, our nation has seen significant progress. That said, Christians must still engage the public square with confidence and discernment in Christ.
