(WNS) - Pro-life advocates on Nov. 8 urged Congress to ensure passage of a bill protecting the conscience rights of healthcare providers. Tears streamed down Cathy DeCarlo’s face as she recounted her experience as a nurse in New York City. In May 2009, DeCarlo entered an operating room assuming she was there to treat a woman after a miscarriage only to find out the unborn baby was still alive. Her supervisor instructed her to help assist in the abortion or risk disciplinary action. … [Read more...]
Darkness & light at Sutherland Springs
GRAPEVINE, Texas (BP) – John’s prologue in the Gospels is my favorite Christmas passage, showing us in theological outline what happened in Bethlehem’s stable. We know that Jesus is “the Word,” the light that shines in the darkness. With somber joy we read that “the darkness did not overcome it.” I thought of that passage as I’ve considered the darkness manifested at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs Nov. 5. As I write this, hours after the event, pundits are talking in the … [Read more...]
Grieving, praying for Sutherland Springs
SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas – Missouri and Southern Baptist leaders expressed broken hearts and prayerful pleas as they reacted to the news of a Nov. 5 shooting that killed 26 and injured 20 at First Baptist Church, Sutherland Springs, Texas. “Our words fail to express the sorrow we feel for this church family and their pastor,” said John Yeats, executive director of the Missouri Baptist Convention. “Their depth of grief is unimaginable. Such slaughter compels us to keep our focus on the … [Read more...]
‘Warm little ponds:’ Flawed hypothesis attempts to explain how life began on Earth
(WNS) – Evolutionary scientists at McMaster University and the Max Planck Institute in Germany recently developed a theoretical model to explain how life began on Earth, according to them, some 3.7 billion to 4.5 billion years ago. But Stephen Meyer, a geophysicist and director of Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture, pointed out numerous holes in the so-called “warm little ponds theory.” The theory, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, claims … [Read more...]
Apple removes pro-life prayer app
(WNS) – Tech giant Apple removed a pro-life prayer app from its App Store following backlash from pro-abortion advocates, another example of bias against Christian groups. Human Coalition’s app, still available on the Google Play Store, displays a list of prayer requests, such as, “Someone considering abortion in Dallas, Texas.” When users signal with a swipe of their thumb that they’ve prayed for the situation, the app updates a daily tally of prayers. The group said Apple removed … [Read more...]
School choice marching orders: Giving military families access to education savings
(WNS) – Military families want school choice. That’s the broad takeaway from a new survey conducted by researchers at EdChoice and the Heritage Foundation. Perhaps not coincidentally, the survey’s results bolster the researchers’ advocacy for a school choice program for children from families associated with the federal government – primarily those whose parents are in the military but also Native American children living on tribal lands. Heritage education policy experts Lindsey Burke … [Read more...]
California embraces gender identity laws
(WNS)--The California legislature was a battleground for gender identity issues this year. Four landmark gender bills passed the state Senate and Assembly by the time the session ended Sep. 15, and California Gov. Jerry Brown signed all four this month. On Oct. 4, Brown signed a bill that criminalizes long-term care facility employees’ “misgendering” of residents. The bill requires workers use transgender residents’ preferred pronouns and mandates that residents be allowed to … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptist lawyers critique federal housing allowance ruling
MADISON, Wisc. – For a second time a federal judge in Wisconsin has ruled the U.S. Tax Code’s ministerial housing allowance is unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb once again attempted to strike down the housing allowance, issuing her decision on Oct. 9. Her previous ruling on the matter was struck down by the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. But the ruling does not impact Missouri clergy, only those in Wisconsin so far, said Missouri Baptist Convention general … [Read more...]
Trump’s new abortion mandate rules promote religious freedom
WASHINGTON (BP) – The Trump administration delivered a major victory for freedom of conscience Oct. 6 by issuing new rules to protect objectors to the abortion/contraception mandate instituted under President Obama. One of the two companion rules announced today exempts entities from the requirement based on their religious beliefs, while the other regulation protects organizations and small businesses on the basis of a moral conviction apart from a specific religious belief. The win for … [Read more...]
Republican Illinois governor OKs state funds for abortion
CHICAGO, Ill. (WNS) - Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican, signed a bill on Sept. 28 approving taxpayer funding for abortion and protecting state abortion provisions in the event the U.S. Supreme Court ever overturns Roe v. Wade. “I personally am pro-choice,” Rauner said at a news conference before signing the bill. “I always have been. And I made no qualms about that when I was elected governor. And I have not and never will change my views. I personally believe that a woman should … [Read more...]
California bill threatens freedoms of religion and speech
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (WNS) – California Assembly Bill 569, which would bar employment discrimination based on “reproductive health” decisions, hit Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk last week. Pro-life groups see the bill as a threat to religious liberty and freedom of speech, as it would nullify employee codes of conduct that cover the use of contraception and abortion. California ProLife Council director Brian Johnston said the bill is “really taking rights away from an employer, who they hire, … [Read more...]
A conflicted culture: Calling evil by its name
It is often the arts in which worldviews are communicated in culture. I am reminded of Thomas Harris’s The Silence of the Lambs, a horror novel made into a grisly, terrifying movie. An imprisoned serial killer, Hannibal Lector, a monster who bludgeoned and cannibalized his victims, is asked by a young female FBI agent to help catch another killer. “What possible reason could I have for cooperating with you?” Lector asks. “Curiosity,” says Agent Starling. “About what?” Lector … [Read more...]
