PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (BP) – A petite, young Kentucky Southern Baptist with a big voice will take perhaps her grandest stage yet when she performs at the presidential inaugural concert. “Whoo! I’m excited,” said Marlana VanHoose, who is a member of Liberty Baptist Church near Paintsville. At little more than 4-feet-tall, VanHoose has led tens of thousands of sports fans at lots of venues in singing the national anthem since she first appeared center court at a University of Kentucky women’s … [Read more...]
Fake news and false prophets
News flash: Ireland is now accepting Trump refugees from the U.S. From our Washington bureau: Hillary Clinton sold weapons to ISIS while secretary of state. And in sports: The Chicago Cubs win the World Series. Fake news is everywhere. (Okay, that last story might be true.) And one of the biggest breaking stories of 2016 was the widespread impact of verifiably false news hosted on bogus websites and amplified through social media. “Yellow journalism” has long been with us – the use of … [Read more...]
Most churches hold Sunday services, Super Bowl or not
For churches that have Sunday night activities, most pastors say it’s still “game on” despite the big game next weekend. According to a new study from Nashville-based LifeWay Research, 68 percent of Protestant pastors say their church typically has some activity on Sunday night. And among those pastors, almost 6 in 10 (59 percent) say they will continue as normal on the night of the Super Bowl. “It is easy to think everyone is watching the game,” said Scott McConnell, executive director … [Read more...]
Inauguration: Trump pledges ‘America first’
WASHINGTON (BP) – Americans will once again come first in their own country, Donald Trump said Friday (Jan. 20) after being sworn in as the 45th president of the United States. In his 16-minute inaugural speech, Trump told the crowd gathered on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol and the national mall, “What truly matters is not which party controls the government but whether our government is controlled by the people. January 20, 2017, will be known as the day the people became the rulers … [Read more...]
Tennessee pastor resigns as IMB trustee over Mosque
MORRISTOWN — A Tennessee Baptist pastor has resigned as a trustee of the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board in response to an action taken by IMB leadership last summer. He had another year to serve on his present term. Dean Haun, pastor of First Baptist Church, Morristown, told the Baptist and Reflector his resignation was in response to the IMB’s May 2016 decision to sign an amicus brief in support of a mosque to be built in New Jersey. “I love our IMB … [Read more...]
Baptists involved with inauguration
WASHINGTON (BP) – The participation of at least five Southern Baptist pastors in inaugural activities for President Donald Trump continues a tradition of prayer, Scripture and references to God surrounding presidential inaugurations dating back to George Washington. Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress preached today (Jan. 20) at a private worship service for the families of Trump and Vice President Mike Pence at St. John’s Church near the White House. The service is a pre-inauguration tradition … [Read more...]
Movie Review ‘Silence’ shows brutal reality of persecution
“Silence” is a clever title for this wholly remarkable film. It can refer to the hushed tones of two missionaries hiding in a secret room. I suppose it could also refer to the fear that keeps the 17th century Japanese believers worshipping in underground house churches. Or maybe it’s referencing the stony, wordless resolve those who refuse to recant their faith. It can even refer to the stunning, minimalist sound track, which features no music, and is content to let the credits roll to … [Read more...]
Refugee simulation brings ‘lasting lesson’ to Kansas City
LIBERTY – After escaping a violent mob, crossing the Ugandan border, and spending time in a refugee camp, the 55 participants of the Blue River-Kansas City Baptist Association’s (BR-KC) first Refugee Simulation experience were awarded the chance to be resettled in another country. “Two hours of life in the refugee camp was enough to give them a taste of the conditions, and the thought of ten years there was too much for participants to handle,” said Andrew Huesing, leader of BR-KC’s People … [Read more...]
Who can solve nation’s challenges?
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – America’s got problems and needs to talk. But few Americans agree on who can best lead a conversation about the nation’s woes, according to a new report from Nashville-based LifeWay Research. Less than a quarter (23 percent) would turn to the office of the U.S. president. About 1 in 10 would turn to the nation’s preachers (11 percent) or to college professors (10 percent). “Almost no one would ask a musician or pro athlete,” says Scott McConnell, executive director … [Read more...]
Leaders candidly affirm power of prayer
There has been little that former Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and I have agreed on when it comes to politics. He has led a party that continues to support abortion on demand, booed God at their national convention and undermined the will of the voters in 30-plus states – including Missouri – as the Democrats supported same-sex “marriage” by judicial fiat. However, we agree on one important issue: the power prayer. It was a blessing to be among the more than 600 people attending Nixon’s final … [Read more...]
Five things a church can do to halt the holocaust
Science has long since outstripped the infamous Roe v. Wade decision of 1973. On Oct. 11, 2016, Oxford University released a study indicating that a baby’s heart begins to beat around the 16th day after conception. By using lab mice, they confirmed that the hearts of baby mice start to beat in 7.5 days. Then, extrapolating to the human anatomy, a baby’s heart begins beating on the 16th day, providing oxygen and nutrients to this living person. The unborn child has his or her own DNA and … [Read more...]
Loving life: Woman chooses life for baby, blesses family
DESLOGE— Sitting at the local clinic awkwardly in a paper gown, Dawn couldn’t stop shivering. She couldn’t … no, she wouldn’t have his baby. How could she keep something that would only be a reminder of the pain and shame of rape? That man was a monster. She had only gone on a few dates with him when he decided to force himself on her. And now she was pregnant. She was working two jobs and could barely take care of the two-year-old son she already had. She would just get a quick abortion … [Read more...]
