VAN BUREN – The seemingly non-stop showers that brought flooding to southern Missouri weren’t all that unusual. What was unusual was just how widespread the flooding and subsequent damage became. The rains that began at the end of April and stretched into the first weeks of May inundated much of Missouri south of Interstate 44, leaving closed roads – and flooded homes – from Neosho in the southwest all the way to Eureka in the St. Louis area. Teams from all across Missouri – including … [Read more...]
Mo. legislature defunds Planned Parenthood
JEFFERSON CITY (Life News) – The Missouri Legislature has approved a budget for the coming fiscal year that bans the allocation of Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood and other providers that perform abortions or refer clients for abortions. Pro-life language containing the restriction on Medicaid reimbursements was inserted into the social services budget for fiscal year 2018, which begins July 1st. The amendment was sponsored by Representative Robert Ross of Yukon. It affects a … [Read more...]
Children’s Home welcomes Ukrainian sister agency
BRIDGETON – Trustees for Missouri Baptist Children’s Home (MBCH) had a little international flavor in addition to the standard budget and ministry reports at their April 25 meeting at the main campus here. Roman and Oksana, a brother and sister duo who help lead New Hope Ukraine, in that eastern European nation, wrapped up a two-week trip in Missouri at the MBCH board meeting. New Hope Ukraine has a number of ministries for children and families, including an orphan ministry. The … [Read more...]
Ken Parker: The Nostalgia of HLGU & Highway 36
It’s easy to become pessimistic, isn’t it? I mean, every time we turn on the television, check the news on the web, read the paper (some of you know what I mean when I say “read the paper”. . . if not, ask your grandparents). We all need things, people, and experiences to help us maintain perspective. I’m afforded the rich opportunity to meet a lot of people and sometimes have the chance to represent Jesus and our church in some really great places. Such was the case last Wednesday. I had … [Read more...]
SBU trustees approve 2017-18 budget
BOLIVAR — Southwest Baptist University’s Board of Trustees approved a preliminary budget for the 2017-18 school year during its meeting April 25. This preliminary budget, set at $61 million, shows an increase from the previous year’s budget. “It was a challenging year for budget planning, probably one of the most challenging during my tenure as president,” said Dr. C. Pat Taylor, SBU president. “Our faculty and staff did an outstanding job of providing information to our executive … [Read more...]
After 20 years in SBC post, Yeats to be renominated
PHOENIX (BP) – John L. Yeats, first elected as the Southern Baptist Convention’s recording secretary in 1997, will be re-nominated for the post during the SBC’s June 13-14 annual meeting in Phoenix. Yeats, executive director of the Missouri Baptist Convention, was serving as editor of the Indiana Baptist convention newsjournal when first elected as SBC recording secretary 20 years ago during the 1997 annual meeting in Dallas. Pastors’ Conference to spotlight Philippians: Two Mo. Baptists among preachers
PHOENIX (BP) – Southern Baptist Pastors' Conference president Dave Miller doesn't expect attendees of this year's sessions to recognize the names of all 12 conference preachers. But that's OK, he said, because the preachers' names aren't the focus. With the theme "above every name," the June 11-12 gathering is centered on 12 pastors of average-sized Southern Baptist churches preaching through the biblical book of Philippians to exalt Jesus' name. Two Missouri Baptists are among these … [Read more...]
Foundation begins search for president
JEFFERSON CITY – After more than six months back in the Missouri Baptists Convention fold, the Missouri Baptist Foundation (MBF) is ready to find its next president. The MBF Board voted April 28 on a four-man search committee from its board. They are Larry Shoaf, chairman of the executive committee; Jay Hughes, a staff member at Second Baptist Church, Springfield, and former controller for the MBC, first vice chairman of the executive committee; and Rob Hawkins, second vice chairman of … [Read more...]
The Cooperative Program helps your pastor
JEFFERSON CITY – Irvin Brooks always valued the Cooperative Program for its support of missions throughout the world. But when the long-time Missouri Baptist pastor retired early with health complications, he became the recipient of benefits partially funded by CP. Brooks pastored three MBC churches over a span of 27 years, and still serves as interim pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Saint Mary, Mo. But when a variety of health issues prevented him from continuing to serve full-time … [Read more...]
Yeats issues DR plea
John Yeats, executive director of the Missouri Baptist Convention, issued an immediate call to support DR efforts and pray for flood victims. “I’m writing to ask you to support Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief efforts in the wake of significant flooding across southern Missouri,” he said. “Further, we are learning that a number of Missouri Baptist churches are under water. I am in contact with the pastors of these churches, and am seeking to reach out to more of our local churches that … [Read more...]
Treasury of Testimonies: A tool for reporting accurate church membership
Baptists are notorious for throwing numbers around. “There are 16.5 million Southern Baptists!” the brochure proudly exclaims. If so, where are they? If only 4 million show up for Sunday school, and estimates run as high as 8 million for worship, what makes us think we can account for all who actually belong to a Southern Baptist church? In the context of churches affiliated with the MBC, we estimate somewhere between 550,000 to 600,000 people acknowledge their membership at one of our … [Read more...]
DR’s witness pops up during late night flood duty
It was somewhere between 2 and 5 a.m., April 30. It was cold, wet, and windy as I watched the waters of the Osage River creep ever closer. When the Cole County Sheriff activated his posse (a ready-to-go group of trained civilian volunteers… no, we don’t chase after cattle rustlers, but my fingers are crossed) for flood duty, I changed into my uniform and immediately confirmed my availability. I thought I might spend the afternoon rescuing stranded citizens trapped in their flooded homes. … [Read more...]
