RAYTOWN – Messengers representing churches affiliated with the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) are gathering Oct. 23-25 at Connection Point Church (formerly First Baptist Church) in Raytown for their 183rd annual meeting. The theme, taken from Luke 10:29, is, “Who is My Neighbor?” Ken Parker, MBC president and senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Kearney, and MBC Executive Director John Yeats address the convention on Monday evening. Kirk Baker, pastor of First Baptist Church in … [Read more...]

Running ‘for’ the disaster: Runner raises money for Mo. Disaster Relief
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – While nearly everyone in their right mind is running away from a disaster, Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers are the ones who run toward it. Now Adam Stoddard, a Missouri Baptist Convention church planting catalyst is running not from or to the disaster, but for it. Stoddard is a trail runner, and hopes to raise at least $3,000 for Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief through his upcoming trail run Sept. 23. But forget a 5K or even a 26.2-mile marathon: Stoddard’s goal is … [Read more...]
100 percent of MBC DR gifts go to disaster ministry
HOUSTON – People are eager to give to those in need after natural disasters like Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, but donators are increasingly eyeing charities’ practices to ensure that their gift provides the biggest benefit for the dollar. On that note, Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief (DR) thrives on donations directly to the ministry and through the Missouri Missions Offering (MMO). Of those funds, 100 percent goes to bringing help, hope and healing to those facing a disaster. No part of … [Read more...]
DR training continues as volunteers mobilize
HANNIBAL – Disaster Relief participants are taught to “be flexible.” The mantra was practiced in training September 8-9 at Calvary Baptist in Hannibal when there were ample reasons to cancel the training. To wit: The training fell between Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and between state disaster relief directors. Four regular session leaders were deployed or returning from Hurricane Harvey relief in Texas. A fifth was cross training in another facet of Disaster Relief. Acting state director … [Read more...]
Juston Gates: The pastor as preacher, administrator
FORSYTH – When Juston Gates of First Baptist Church, Forsyth, first surrendered to the ministry, he imagined that most of his time would involve preaching, prayer and other “neat, spiritual stuff,” but 18 years in ministry have taught him otherwise. In fact, he came to find out that many of his days were filled with administrative tasks: making financial decisions, overseeing the work of committees, leading meetings and equipping the church’s ministry staff. “We (pastors) make so many … [Read more...]
Vic Borden: The pastor as counselor and guide
KANSAS CITY – Vic Borden, the pastor of Red Bridge Baptist Church here, focuses on his ministry strengths. For him, that means walking alongside his congregation as shepherd and counselor, weeping with those who weep and rejoicing with those who rejoice. “I’m just an OK administrator, theologian and preacher, but I am in my zone when I am tending the flock,” Borden said. I have that heart for God’s people, and I think they would tell you that. I feed them and I watch out for them and … [Read more...]
David Wells: The pastor as servant-leader
HILLSBORO – When it comes to serving, pastor David Wells prefers to lead Sandy Baptist Church by example. “Whether it is serving through missions, ministering or disaster relief, you can’t take the people where you haven’t been,” he said. “If I want them to serve, I need to be their servant first. Servanthood is about doing it with them, not for them.” Wells was in a perfect position to model servant leadership for Sandy Baptist. When they called him as pastor, they specifically asked … [Read more...]
‘May we never forget’
I appreciated the article in the August 8th issue entitled, Missouri Baptists honored by seminary for leadership in Conservative Resurgence. The resurgence is a significant part of the history of a people called Southern Baptist. That Southwestern Seminary would honor John Yeats, Gerald Davidson, Jim Wells, Fred Powell, and James Hefley for their leadership in moving the SBC back to its historic commitment to the Scriptures as infallible, authoritative, and inerrant is commendable. Without … [Read more...]
The Cooperative Program and the ‘Missouri Plan’
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the third of several articles commemorating the Baptist history in Missouri, written by members of the Missouri Baptist Convention’s Historical Commission. Many Missouri Baptists do not realize how influential our state association was in establishing the current model for the Cooperative Program. In 1845, when the Southern Baptist Convention was formed by withdrawing fellowship from the Baptist Triennial Convention, many states like Missouri had to decide which … [Read more...]
SBU students design mobile app for state fair
BOLIVAR (SBU) – Four Southwest Baptist University Computer and Information Sciences students created an app used during the Missouri State Fair this year in Sedalia. The students met with Missouri Lt. Gov. Mike Parson in February to present the design of their mobile application for the state fair. “This is our first senior project with the Missouri state government, but so far, it has really been a great experience for our students,” and Dr. Tim DeClue, CIS department chair. The … [Read more...]

JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Baptist Apologetics Network members Adam Cochrun and Dave Van Bebber have launched a bi-weekly podcast called “T.A.G. You’re It!” The podcast features interviews and debates about culture, current events, theology, and cults from a biblical perspective. “We wanted to do something that no other Missouri Baptist apologists were doing,” said Van Bebber. “We wanted to amplify the voice of Missouri Baptists engaged in defending the Christian faith.” Van Bebber and … [Read more...]
