KIRKSVILLE – When asked if his ministry at Truman State has always focused on reaching international students, Campus Missionary Greg Xander laughs. “Not intentionally,” he says. When he took over as BSU Director 11 years ago, reaching international students was not on his radar. “I grew up in Edina,” he says. “Population: all white.” Neither he nor his wife, Stacey, had overseas experience, nor had they known any international students when they attended Truman Gene Austin, now the … [Read more...]
Will we believe God for the impossible?
February sees winter roaring into Missouri and across middle America. Historic multiple days of cold and frozen precipitation, coupled with COVID-19 cautions, are like a perfectly planted gut punch in a boxing match for many of our churches. Missouri Baptist pastors, like their colleagues in many other states, have worked diligently and faithfully to help their churches stay on mission. Many of our churches are reporting upswings in baptisms and budgets. Yet, there are too many struggling … [Read more...]
DR sends hand sanitizer to The Baptist Home, associations, churches
JEFFERSON CITY – In a pandemic it is important to wash hands often and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer frequently. The Missouri Baptist Convention Disaster Relief (DR) ministry was the recipient of a shipment of 48 pallets of hand sanitizer from the non-profit organization Global Citizen USA, based in Chicago, Ill. Of that shipment, the Baptist Homes in Chillicothe, Ironton and Ozark were provided 10 pallets, and 38 others have been distributed to associations and churches around … [Read more...]
Freedom on the Inside: HLGU ministry in state prison thrives, transforms lives
JEFFERSON CITY – Imagine a typical university class of eager ministerial students, then imagine the same in a maximum security prison. Rodrick Sweet doesn’t have to imagine: He knows both classrooms and sees little difference. His class at the Jefferson City Correctional Center (JCCC), he says, is all men and they’re all in uniform. Other than that, teaching in the prison setting for him isn’t so different than other college and university classrooms where he’s taught. Sweet’s … [Read more...]
Blessed to be part of God’s work among Missouri Baptists
I came to Missouri because God called me here. I felt God wanted to do something great in Missouri, and He invited me to join in. It has been 19 years, and I do not regret one second of the time I have spent serving the Lord in Missouri. It has not always been easy, but such is to be expected in a fallen world. When you start a newspaper with zero readers, it is a God-sized project. Given the continuing battle over the Bible between conservatives and moderates as well as legal control of … [Read more...]

MBTS’s Allen: ‘Five Reasons Why I Enjoy Reading Biographies’
KANSAS CITY – “The history of the world is but the biography of great men,” argued Thomas Carlyle, the proponent of what has come to be known as the “Great Man Theory of History.” This theory suggests that the broader movements and contours of history all go back to the leadership of great individuals who exerted unique influence on their times. Whether or not Carlyle’s theory proves true is debatable, but that certain individuals cast long shadows is not. More than a cultural observation … [Read more...]
‘Bwana asifiwe! Praise the Lord!’: With God’s praise on their lips, Missouri family returns to Africa
UGANDA – During their early years as International Mission Board field workers in sub-Saharan Africa, Kody and Erin Brandt found immense help from a Muslim man named John. “John was really instrumental in helping me with the language,” Kody told The Pathway. “I shared so many Bible stories with him, and he would give me pointers and tips on how to rephrase something to be more effective. He helped me prepare my testimony in the language.” John also helped Kody prepare his first sermon in … [Read more...]

FBC Clever strengthens men in biblical relationships
CLEVER – February traditionally focuses on relationships. So First Baptist Church, Clever, is using it to emphasize Godly men’s relationships through a four-week conference. The church has begun four Monday night, 2-hour sessions to cover topics “we don’t talk enough about inside of the church directly to men,” said Lead Pastor Brian Jump. “Sunday morning, you can’t do that. This (conference) gives us an opportunity to be very direct.” He hopes Men’s Month for teens and men will help … [Read more...]
Other witnesses to Christ’s deity
This is another in a series of excerpts from “What Every Christian Should Know About the Trinity,” available through Amazon and other booksellers. In previous columns, we saw how John and Paul affirm the deity of Jesus. Here, we briefly survey the witness of the author of Hebrews, as well as Peter. Hebrews 1:2-3 – Note several truths about Christ’s deity in these verses. First, God made the universe through Jesus. That is, Jesus is the Creator. When the writer of Hebrews says “through … [Read more...]
Missourians consider opportunities in Montana
Long-term partnerships ‘make a difference,’ Montana’s Fowler says JEFFERSON CITY – More than a dozen Missouri Baptists gathered, Jan. 28, to hear from former Missourian and long-time Montana minister Steve Fowler about opportunities for building mission partnerships with churches in the state. “We’re excited about the partnership (with Missouri),” Fowler told The Pathway after the meeting at the Baptist building here. “We’re especially excited about this being a seven-year commitment … [Read more...]
