WAYNESVILLE – Sharing Jesus is our Great Commission, and Larry Atkins – pastor emeritus of Buckhorn FBC, Waynesville, and member of the Fellowship of Missouri Baptist Evangelists – has made it a way of life. “We all should make sharing a part of our work or whatever we are doing,” Atkins said. “We need to be on the lookout for an opportunity to share.” In addition to being a pastor through the years, Atkins has led more than 200 revivals. “Whenever I was being considered as a pastor for … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptists called to be salt, light in public sphere
KANSAS CITY – Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) President Chris Williams, pastor of Fellowship Church in Greenwood, has called his congregation to “contend for the faith in the public square in a manner that is gospel-centered and grounded in truth.” But Fellowship Church isn’t the only congregation equipping Missouri Baptists to be salt and light in their communities, state and nation. ‘Bring your faith into politics’ “Politics is important,” Williams told his church, March 3. In fact, … [Read more...]
More than Hoop Dreams: Spurgeon College player prepping for the next level
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) – There was a time in his life when basketball was the only thing that made sense to Jude Warren. It was his anchor. It was what kept him from going in the wrong direction. A salvation experience before his junior year in high school replaced basketball with a love for Jesus. That led to a renewed focus in life. His love for the sport didn’t wane, but with a new outlook Warren went on to a record-breaking career for Spurgeon College and a National Player of the Year … [Read more...]
Following the instructions
“Lather, rinse, repeat.” If we actually follow the shampoo instructions to the letter, won’t we end up in a shower time-loop of some sort? Forever and ever pruny? I looked up some of the other more “out there” directions and found a can of spray paint with the warning label, “Do not spray in your face.” Well, well. Just when I thought I’d found a new makeup regimen. I found the perfect blow dryer instructions too. “Do not use while sleeping.” Um. Who’s doing that? Who? Also how? Granted, … [Read more...]
Study of Minor Prophets equips college men to lead, share faith
JOPLIN – The Minor Prophets isn’t a typical selection of focus for a Bible study, much less among college students. Yet this “often overlooked corner of Scripture” is exactly what Campus Missionary Jon Smith of Missouri Southern State University chose for his BSU men to study last semester. As if studying the Minor Prophets wasn’t difficult enough, the study came with a catch: each guy would have to lead at least one week, choosing a prophet, studying it, and presenting their findings to … [Read more...]
Springfield’s Macedonia Baptist experiences revival
SPRINGFIELD – Established 138 years ago in a one-room schoolhouse, Macedonia Baptist Church served Springfield as a beacon of hope for many generations. But the church had fallen on hard times and entered a season of stagnation and growth over the last 20 years. Despite facing challenges and difficulties over the years, the church's commitment to spreading the gospel remained. In the last 3 years, however, the church has experienced a remarkable revival, as they have grown by more than 30 … [Read more...]
Global Rural Network wants rural churches to partner with IMB
RICHMOND, Va. (IMB) – Reaching rural communities with the gospel is something Jeff Clark is passionate about. He grew up in a farming community. Then, God called him to minister among rural peoples in Asia. It’s only natural for the International Mission Board rural network mobilizer to envision his two worlds colliding — rural churches in the U.S. connecting with IMB’s rural ministries through a global rural network. “It doesn’t matter where you are from or even if you share a language, … [Read more...]

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Danger and risk for a family member sharing the gospel would be troubling, but that is what is happening to the persecuted church. “These are our brothers and sisters in Christ,” Trent Young, DOM for Gasconade Valley Baptist Association, said. “They are our family, and they are risking their lives every day sharing the gospel of Jesus with others in their community.” Young and his wife, Dana, organized a group from the Gasconade Valley Baptist Association to … [Read more...]

The writer of Hebrews and Christ’s return
This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. In previous columns, we briefly surveyed some of Paul’s writings regarding the return of Jesus. Here, we see what the writer of Hebrews has to say about Christ’s glorious appearing. The writer of Hebrews implores Jewish Christians to stay faithful, despite mounting pressure to return to Judaism. The same Jesus who died once … [Read more...]
Mississippi church is answer to Romanian pastor’s 30-year prayer
ROMANIA (IMB) – Thirty years was a long time to wait for help. Yet, the Romanian pastor had faithfully prayed since he was 8 years old for someone to come alongside him to serve and love his people. Meanwhile, Jan McMurphy sat in Olive Branch, Mississippi, wrestling with God about an “itch” for the mission field she couldn’t shake. For 16 years she served on short-term medical mission teams with other Mississippi Baptists. The last few years she brought her church, Longview Heights … [Read more...]
