SPRINGFIELD – A short-term mission trip over twenty-five years ago sparked a long-term mission partnership between the Greene County Baptist Association and the Emmanuel Baptist Association in Guadalajara, Mexico. Since 1997, churches in the GCBA have sent teams to Guadalajara, partnering with Mexican churches to meet practical needs and share the Gospel. According to Samuel Gonzalez, the GCBA Ethnic Ministry consultant, the partnership has produced much Gospel fruit. “The first … [Read more...]
War changes face of ministry to Deaf Ukrainians
by Tessa Sanchez/IMB UKRAINE (IMB) – In Ukraine, Oleh and Marianna weren’t permitted to lead ministry to the Deaf because they are Deaf. Missions tugged at their hearts, but due to cultural norms, it wasn’t a possibility until recently. Like many of their countrymen, Oleh and Marianna fled because of the war. They found a Deaf church and their world changed even more. As Ukranian refugees made their way to this congregation, the church reached out to long time International Mission … [Read more...]
‘Rapidly growing’ Burmese church aims to reach youth, raise leaders
PURDY – The year 2020 was a difficult one for churches across the nation. With the emergence of COVID-19, many church members chose to stay home and worship online, hoping to hinder the virus’ spread through social distancing. Outreach ministries were put on hold and gatherings were suspended. Despite coronavirus concerns, a small group of Burmese immigrants began gathering for worship in 2020 and, today, Farm Chin Baptist Church (FCBC) is a growing community seeking to make a kingdom … [Read more...]
Small Deepwater congregation makes large community impact
DEEPWATER – For a church that’s over 160 years old and has an average Sunday morning attendance of 40, Mount Zion Baptist Church in Deepwater seems surprisingly youthful and energetic in its ministries. Its largest ministry, the Storehouse at the Mount, serves the community through regular distribution of food and household items. It was begun by member Alesha Jenkins, who says the pantry was miraculously founded and continues to experience miracles. She had been homeschooling three sons … [Read more...]
MBC Executive Director Wes Fowler: ‘We proclaim Jesus’
SPRINGFIELD – Whatever else Missouri Baptists do in days to come, the Missouri Baptist Convention’s (MBC) new executive director Wes Fowler said they must proclaim the name of Jesus. His exhortation closed the MBC annual meeting, Oct. 24, at Crossway Baptist Church in Springfield. Many people, Fowler said, have asked about his plans for the future of the MBC. His current answer? Before making any other plans, his present plan is to listen and to learn about Missouri Baptist churches, … [Read more...]
Missouri evangelist Roger Alford goes where God guides
WARRENTON – “After pastoring for 42 years the Lord led me to hang up my pastor hat and start traveling as an evangelist as well as to do mission work,” says Roger Alford, a member of the Missouri Baptist Convention’s Fellowship of Missouri Baptist Evangelists. It was 10 years ago Alford moved from the pulpit into evangelism to start leading New Faith Ministries (NFM), which conducts church revivals, tent revivals, home groups, and one-on-one soul winning. He has 12 to 20 events a year, … [Read more...]

FBC Hayti hosts DR for nearly one year
HAYTI – “What would you do if Disaster Relief came to your area? Would you be ready?” Those are questions First Baptist, Hayti, Pastor Mark Hoover says every church should ask, because Disaster Relief (DR) workers quickly need local church support when teams move into an area to help communities clean up following natural disasters. For the church in Missouri’s Bootheel the story is a little different: It’s shared its building resources with DR teams since mid-February on an extended … [Read more...]
Missouri DR assists Glenallen community after double disaster
GLENALLEN – It’s not unusual for Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief (MODR) teams to return to an area more than once due to back-to-back floods. But it’s rare that MODR teams would be called on to provide aid following two different disasters just months apart. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened in Glenallen. In April, a tornado struck the area, killing five people, injuring several others and leaving a trail of devastation behind. MODR teams were on the ground in a matter of days … [Read more...]

Under new leadership, the church is placing a renewed emphasis on local ministry in order to engage the inhabitants of Joplin and the surrounding communities. Senior Pastor Brian Jump explained that reaching the local … [Read more...]
The power of a personal invitation
I felt my call to vocational ministry back in 2005 during a revival service at Union Hill Baptist Church in Holts Summit, Mo. Shortly after that, I began looking at colleges to attend in order to begin the preparation process for this calling and I was connected to Dr. Tom Hufty who, at the time, served as Vice President at Hannibal-LaGrange College (now University). I’ll never forget my first discussion with him as I was explaining my call to pastoral ministry and how he looked me in … [Read more...]
Song of the Cyrene: IMB calls Southern Baptists to pray for Libya after Sept. 11 deluge
by Tessa Sanchez/IMB DERNA, Libya (IMB) – Two stories worth of water wiped out land with Christian history and tradition dating back millennia on Sept. 11. Rain from Storm Daniel overwhelmed the dams in Derna, Libya, and the deluge claimed entire neighborhoods and the lives of thousands. “In recent days, the world has witnessed unspeakable tragedies,” IMB President Paul Chitwood said. “The death toll from the Morocco earthquake is nearing 3,000. In Libya, more than 11,000 have been … [Read more...]
