HANNIBAL – Families based upon healthy marriages make for healthy communities, Brad Wilcox said during the first of two presentations at the Missouri Baptist Convention’s Worldview Conference, April 14. “I’m sure you’ve heard this idea, this phrase, that it ‘takes a village to raise a child,’” said Wilcox, who is director of the National Marriage Project and serves as an associate professor of sociology at the University of Virginia. “I would just add to that, ‘It takes a married village … [Read more...]
Labeling porn ‘public health hazard’ may bring change in treatment
WASHINGTON (BP) – Labeling pornography a “public health hazard” may prove to be a game-changer. That is the hope of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) and its allies in the attempt to prevent exposure and addiction to pornography and to help those impacted by its use. The effort to reverse the spread of sexually explicit material and its effects received a boost March 29, when Utah Gov. Gary Herbert signed a resolution saying pornography is establishing “a public health … [Read more...]
Gender confusion and child abuse
Which of the following options would you define as “child abuse”? A) a parent encourages a child to pursue desires that will cause irreparable physical, psychological and emotional damage. B) a parent protects the child from these desires, despite the child’s insistence on what’s best. The answer seems easy, but when it comes to the debate over treatment for gender-confused children, many medical professionals demonstrate competing worldviews that will prove disastrous for this … [Read more...]
‘Ministry in the New Marriage Culture’
We live in a culture that is increasingly hostile to what the Bible teaches us about sexuality, gender, and marriage. Christians seeking to live out their faith beyond their homes and churches have faced resistance, criticism, accusations of discrimination, and in some cases legal action. Religious liberty bills designed to safeguard the freedom of those who seek to live out a biblical ethic have recently been signed into law in both North Carolina and Mississippi, and they have met with … [Read more...]

Religious liberty focus of new study
NASHVILLE (BP) – A growing number of Americans believe religious liberty is on the decline and that the nation's Christians face growing intolerance, according to a survey by LifeWay Research. Those surveyed also noted American Christians complain too much. Those are among the findings of a new study of views about religious liberty from LifeWay Research. Researchers surveyed 1,000 Americans in September 2013 and September 2015 and then compared the results. Two-thirds (63 percent) … [Read more...]

Don’t miss a beat in loving others
Now that all my children are adults, I can tell you that raising the five of them was very often like a game of full-contact musical chairs. Without the chairs. It wasn’t so much about the wrestling—though believe me, there was plenty of that. But it was more about the music. Always even more of that. All three of my sons are in music ministries now and the two daughters are musical too. When Daniel, my youngest, was around twelve, he started drumming. He drummed on tables. He drummed on … [Read more...]
A mess of baby powder, sin
Our son Andrew really likes baby powder, sugar and salt. The only place he doesn’t like them is in the containers they usually come in. He loves for them to cover the floor, bed, toys, clothes, dishes and basically every surface and room in the house. I am still amazed at how quickly the latest supply of baby powder wound up on him, all over our bedroom, one of our cats and parts of the hallway. I had briefly turned away from him to fold some clothes when all of a sudden I smelled a very … [Read more...]

One baby’s death impacts many lives
INDEPENDENCE — There’s no way adequately to describe how a mom feels when a baby dies within her womb. “Disheartening” is the word Krystalle Wheeler, a member at Noland Road Baptist Church here, used when sharing about what it was like to feel her daughter, Gracia, die after carrying her for nearly 24 weeks. “My womb swelled,” she said, “and her movements lessened.” “There is nothing normal about cemetery shopping for your child,” she added. “Our oldest was 3 at the time, and she picked … [Read more...]
