ASHEVILLE, N.C. (BP) – The Council for Christian Colleges and Universities has adopted new guidelines to address evolving differences among member schools on the definition of marriage. “We believe that this document rightly articulates both the core and the breadth of the CCCU in a way that will make us the most effective witness and advocate for Christian higher education,” board chairman Charles Pollard, president of John Brown University, wrote to CCCU presidents in a letter dated … [Read more...]
Abortion & the Election: Five million plus children
There are many voices screaming at the top of their lungs, attempting to sway the vote of adults in this nation for their particular candidate. By this stage of the game, only the uninformed are unaware that both candidates are seriously flawed. It is a good thing when the personality of the leader exudes greatness and virtue, but neither of the candidates’ characters and personality traits rise to a level worthy of enthusiastic support. But this election was never as much about which … [Read more...]

New report endangers liberty
WASHINGTON (BP) – Religious liberty as Americans have known it throughout their history will suffer a critical setback if a new report by the country’s top civil rights panel is followed, say Southern Baptist and other advocates for the First Amendment freedom. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (USCCR) declared in its Sept. 7 report protections to ensure nondiscrimination “are of preeminent importance in American jurisprudence” and religious exemptions from safeguards for such … [Read more...]

N.C. restroom bill doesn’t deter plans for SBC annual meeting in 2023
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BP) – Amid controversy over North Carolina’s controversial transgender restroom law, Southern Baptist Convention leaders estimate they’re less than two weeks away from finalizing contracts to hold the 2023 SBC annual meeting in Charlotte. And they say they’re glad to support the state for its moral stand on gender and sexuality. SBC President Steve Gaines said that “while other organizations such as the NCAA, NBA and NFL are seeking to punish North Carolinians for their … [Read more...]
Behind closed doors
“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward.” – Psalms 127:3 (NKJV) What has happened in our country that so many no longer consider children a blessing as God intended? It seems that daily we hear of stories of children being mistreated that rend the heart of those who care. Consider these true stories told to me: • A church youth worker was informed by a student at a Christian camp that her mother was jealous of her because the mother’s boyfriend … [Read more...]
A consequential election for our nation’s judiciary
To modify the book title of a conservative classic written by the incomparable English professor Richard Weaver, elections have consequences. That fact will play-out Nov. 8. Hanging in the balance is control of the U.S. Supreme Court, all 13 U.S. Circuit Appellate Courts, hundreds of federal and state judicial appointments and our state’s attorney general. Voters will chart, for decades to come, one of two courses for our federal and state judiciaries. Will we have judges who uphold the … [Read more...]
Gay custody battles expand definition of parenthood
NEW YORK (WNS) – New York’s highest court changed the definition of parenthood in September to include former partners with no biological or adoptive tie to a child. The decision by the New York Court of Appeals overturns a 25-year-old definition restricting parenthood to a biological or adoptive person. The new definition expands the term parent to include caretakers who initially agreed to conceive and raise a child. Under the ruling, if an unmarried same-sex couple with children splits, … [Read more...]
Study: Abortion increases rate of mental health disorders
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (BP) – It may be no surprise to pro-life advocates that a new study published in the July 2016 issue of the peer-reviewed journal SAGE Open Medicine confirms women who have abortions run a significantly increased risk of mental health disorders and substance abuse. But the research offers an important boon to pro-life groups in the U.S., where scientific evidence showing the harmful consequences of abortion for women has been scarce because available data is inconsistent and … [Read more...]
‘Intergalactic missions’?
NASHVILLE (BP) – Discovery of another planet that might support life has given rise to speculation about intelligent life elsewhere in the universe – and whether such lifeforms would need the Gospel. “Briefly stated, saying that scientists ‘think there may be life’ on [the newly discovered planet] is greatly overstating what the scientific community is thinking,” said Bill Nettles, physics department chair at Union University. But “if there is intelligent life on other planets, we … [Read more...]
God is still in our schools
Watching sand pass through an hourglass always captivated me as a child. It seemed as though the mass of sand would never pass through the bottleneck, but in quick order the final grains fell. There is a bottleneck where nearly every person over the next 20 years will pass. The church could surround this bottleneck and change communities and impact every life in across the nation over a few decades. Some churches have realized the great strategic value and have already gotten started. The … [Read more...]
